What does Jormungandr do?

The ch2 update added the big snake to free during each combat encounter, yet once he's free he just slithers around and stares at the bottom of the cliff. Is there something I'm missing, or a function I've not discovered yet? I don't care about spoilers, I just want to know if this big guy does something.

I haven't played yet, but I watched a YouTuber play all the way thru Chapter 2. You can't interact with them other than freeing them. I suspect they help you in Chapter 3. (And maybe in 2.)

And it is more than one. It is a species of snake that lives in the void.
