how to apply bandage

I made bandages and my next quest says use them. i keep trying to use them but its not working. i read hit Q but when i do it brings the bandage up but nothing else happens

press Q, hold Q to choose bandage. Afaik you cant bandage while full health.

go through the gate to the station. steam will come out of the pipes, stand under it and your health will drop. use the bandage (english is not my native language, sorry for mistakes)
