The Rofleemos Should Collect Resources
Rofleemos are useless, they should manage resources on your train to allow the player to focus on other things. Send one out on collection duty, and he collects as good as or almost as good as the player. Send two or three to scour the void. Assign a quartermaster to manage items within chests for an entire train car, so when you need something you go to them rather than the chests. When the player tries to build something they don't have the items for, create an assignment for a rofleemo to build it so it's waiting on the bench when it's done. They already teleport so animations aren't necessary.
With these improvements, the player can devote more of their time to protecting the train, researching, and being an engineer, and less of their time being an NPC collecting crap they found in space.

There are collector-stations (not sure about the right name). But those you can build on a train-wagon and than let a Rofleemo work there. Every 40 seconds it collects one random ressource. I'm not sure if you can build multiple, but you should be.
But it's a bit of what you asking for.

The problem with those is they take up a full wagon platform, which means one less Rofleemo total, and you need a rofleemo assigned to it.

That's 2 Rofleemo you could have doing something else, like reducing fuel cost or speeding up production. I think the fuel cost reductions, additional resources on craft and/or crafting speed outweigh a bit of extra standard loot.

Absolute waste of space with the steam engine, maybe OK temp when you get diesel until you get enough Rofleemo to fill up the empty beds.

What i would *much* prefer is Rofleemo's assigned to a station automate it in some way. Thats what i thought they would be doing when i learned they could be assigned as workers.

Also like the quartermaster idea. They already have the feature implemented, since when you're building your train it can see all your resources in every chest.

Expand the wagon, then build the gathering-station. That'd what I've been doing

They dont "collect". Its just spawned out of nowhere.

We need "traditional" raft gathering nets that we can extent from the cabs, hehe.

I think something closer to the subnautica "gravity ball" would fit better, just haul a loot magnet around that pulls in things.

There are mining-work animations for them(+CD-Timer)..so they kinda do it. Never said that they collect what I can collect by hand..

Big issue is they dont really collect anything. They just slowly spawn resources over time. We need something like the collection nets. Otherwise, the game is just this constant chug at the slowest possible speed or you miss everything.

This. If the gathering stations ramped up with the speed of the train, it wouldn't be so bad. But if like me you're running 4 gathering stations, then going at anything other than the slowest possible speed is a waste.

I think copying hook-gathering from Raft without properly understanding that Raft actually moves to "auto-gathering" with the nets, was a big mistake.

Right now I would opt to rework "continous hook-gathering" for rather "concentrated mining/gathering spots". So more "move-hold" gameplay, instead of constant slow-crawl.

Also some people get utterly nuts because the game urges them to "gather everything", so they barely move forward. Its definatly a flawed design.
Rofleemos just shouldn't exist. they're a goofy aesthetic blight on an otherwise cool train and would be fine as a decorative element I am not forced to have but as a game mechanic I truly loath them.
If I were actually in such a scenario I would construct electromagnets and possibly giant nets for Gathering resources.....putting goofy, semi-intelligent plushy toys into indentured servitude would not be my first option.

The resource grind with baby sized storage and stacks makes the game much more tedious than it needs to be, everything just feels so clunky from the lack of crafting que to the lack of automation

Gathering station needs option to choose what it gathers and then both grab fly-by pieces of chosen type and generate 1 every now and then wIth Happines of squid unlocking resource generating and how often it can grab chunks floating around.
