Why is everyone so...ugly?
It's a chore to find a portrait now with remotely nice features...

Most games seem to be going down the ugly route these days, so CK clearly wants to follow the trend i guess. As to why this is...... tbh I have no idea.

Especially tall characters are hideous. Okay they are tall, but why ugly?

That's because you don't have this mod installed.

And it isn't updated for the new patch yet, anyways.

That is the worst part when DLC releases, the long wait when does the EPE update so you don't have to look hideously ugly vanilla ck3 characters.

Not everyone can be a supermodel and ya know what - SM's are generally spoiled and entitled ^%$%()s:steambored:. Those that aren't SM's try harder and really care:steamhappy:.

Aside: There are of course exceptions to the above not all SM's are ^%$%()s and not all non-SM's really give a damn or try harder.

Then again CK3 is just a game. I suppose it's OKAY to day dream a bit while playing and fantasize about that young beauty your dad the King arranged for ya to marry. :steamfacepalm: Or - maybe it's not.

I do enjoy EFP though, the armor and clothes are pretty cool.

I'd be willing to bet there are more ugly, or normal, looking people on this planet than people who are attractive, which tbqh, is a social construct and standards of beauty have often changed throughout history. Still, what we think is attractive is probably programmed into us, like symmetrical features and whatnot. It's kind of funny that the beauty line of traits just add makeup to your character and round out their features. With all these different settings for character faces, if you just randomize people, you're going to get a lot of wonk out of it, unlike CK2 where it was a lot easier to create specific facial features that were pleasant to look at, and when combined make an attractive character.

So I guess what I'm saying is that it's probably not intentional and it's just a symptom of the sliders.

Yep. Plus in paintings people looked funny in the 10th century!

They did just fine. Not everyone is ugly at all. Not in my game anyway.

Beauty is not a "social construct".
In fact, there's a whole science branch about aesthetics researching that.
One of the results:

Take random photos of thousands of people of the same ethnicity.
Let a computer generate one average face from these photos.
Then show all these photos to test subjects of the same ethnicity.

The vast majority of people in a query will always choose the computer-generated image as the objectively "most beautiful" one. Simply because it is perfect. Perfectly average, perfectly boring - but perfectly beautiful.

So basically, human beauty is not an artificial construct. It means an absence of irregularities and deformities.
