Increase your piety, which increases your level of devotion. Going on a pilgramages is the main way to do this, but they have a long cool down. Take the Theologian tree in the learning lifestyle. Get traditions that improve piety, like Religious Patronage or Fervent Temple Builders.

One Pilgrimage got me out of the negative piety, but I am still a sinner. However the Sinners are more stronger than me it keeps saying There Army is Superior than mine. If I could get the liege to join me in the war, it might help.
