You get abilities to lower stress by getting stressed out. Those traits you get when you get stressed out unlock abilities that lower stress in your decisions menu. Some of them are completely beneficial too, like athletic or journaler.

Don't take this perk, this perk currently is bugged as hell, because it can kill you after you have recovered from an deadly wound or illness.

And the way the perk is working, when ever you would die, you get another 1 year and then the perk kills you even you have perfect health.
Never happen to me yet

-these are round, they look like pills to me :re3charlie:

If you have the Just trait, you can reveal secrets for stress loss. Park your spymaster on a major court and you'll have enough secrets to keep your stress zeroed out almost permanently.

That's working exactly as intended, as far as I'm aware. If you didn't have the perk, then you'd have died earlier.

That was my understanding as well. if I'm not mistaken, the perk event triggers when you normally would have died. So in effect, it's giving you an extra free year of life, which is why increasing your health doesn't extend it further.

That is indeed what happens. If a death trigger fires while you have Know Thyself unlocked, the following happens:

  • First, it checks for a flag that signifies if Know Thyself has fired already.
  • If the flag doesn't exist, it sets that flag and then suppresses the death trigger to keep it from continuing.
  • After suppressing the trigger, it rolls a random number around 365 to determine how much extra time you get. This number can vary by a few days in either direction.
  • Once the number of days it rolled for has passed, it fires another death trigger. Since the flag for Know Thyself is set for your character now, the death trigger processes normally and your character dies.

For emphasis, once the death trigger has fired the first time, you are going to die when the countdown finishes. No amount of extra health or perks will prevent your impending death, because you've effectively already died. The perk is just giving you some extra time to get your affairs in order.

That's basically what my understanding has been of it. Thanks for the solid confirmation and explanation!

I didn't know the perk gave you an extra year of life. I just love it because getting the advanced notification before succession is so useful. But that's just icing on the cake.

Also, I've tested the death date numerous times because I too was curious as to the "about" date, and it actually is very close to a year. I've never had it happen more than 3 weeks early. I think they just roll a d20 and subtract that many days from a year, or something like that.

Hey MonkeyB,

You sure the Sadistic trait gives stress loss from torturing some poor sap? Makes sense to me, but scouring the wiki I only found "Stress loss through Execution and Murder" for Sadistic.

my current character is generous, and stress is a non-issue. Every time I grant a title it is a massive stress loss.

The wiki does say that. Odd. It's more than possible I am wrong, or that the stress relief is caused by something else, but I am almost certain it does. I will have to check.

Edit: Just checked. Works for both Highborn and lowborn with Sadistic.

OK that looks pretty conclusive, I'll update the guide accordingly.

Thanks for going to that trouble!
