1. Most baronies generate little income
2. as far as I know, only cities have an owner
3. That would be a hell of a struggel to kingdom or even duchy

Barons in CK3 barely qualify as characters. They can't take lifestyles, they don't marry, they can't declare wars, and their land can be freely revoked at any time without penalties. You can't play barons for the same reason you can't play as courtiers: they don't really have much gameplay associated with them. Barons exist solely as placeholders to occupy holdings higher level rulers can't hold.

On CK2 there was a mod that let's you play as a nobody with no rank, no land,..etc then you could slowly climb up the ladders, eventually become a baron of a castle, and go further up.

In CK3, there are constant updates for the main game, so mods constantly need to be re-updated, which complicates the process of creating such a mod. For the moment, I dont think such a mod exist.

In conclusion, you cannot play as a baron, for now.

I had wanted to start as a baron and the research I saw about why Paradox didn't set it up to start at baron level is because it would have to change the map too much. I'm not sure, but I think that means that all baronies would have to be listed on the map instead of the map starting at just the county level. It's like listing the map from barony level would have overloaded the map or something. I'm not technical, but that's the gist I got from it. Someone who is technical and knows better, please kindly correct me, if need be.

Regardless, try the Bum to God mod, as it's the closest you'll get. It's still buggy when playing as a baron, but at least after being a lowborn, you do get the chance in this mod to play as a baron. You'll want to become a count asap just to get out of the bugginess, though.

That's funny because the mod Ave Maria is overhauling the game to make each barony it's own county. So it can be done, they just didn't.

Why do you want to play as a baron?

I read a biography of Elizabeth Bathory - who lived during the Renaissance in Hungary - and a common pejorative was calling someone stuff like "A baron of two apple trees and a pig" or "a baron of a tavern and its outhouse" because it was such a minor title that was so freely given.

She herself was such a powerful duchess that the Holy Roman Emperor was kind of afraid of bringing charges against her (for beating hundreds of little girls to death for sadistic pleasure) because her family was more powerful than he was and he'd only recently barely won a revolt against her cousin.

Barons do marry and have kids but they don't often marry their heirs, sometimes but not often. I just wished they didn't get rid of the protection that barons had in early versions of the game. It used to be that barons would be relatively unmolested but in more recent versions their liege lords often usurp their titles with regularity.
