First, work on understanding the succession mechanics correctly, that's probably the number one thing most players have their biggest initial struggle with. It's clear you don't fully grasp them at all; you're dealing with 9th century unreformed paganism here. What you describe about your realm fracturing is normal - you have to learn the strategies to counteract this and use them.
However, Africa isn't the best place for you to learn freely, it can be a more challenging environment where you're instantly surrounded by enemies and can get quick game overs.
I would highly suggest playing instead as the selectable scenario character who is the Petty King in Ireland in the 1066 starts. Dynasty name Briain I think. Play around with him and learn about the strategies to plan and manage your inheritance.
Basically, you want to have either male or female preferred succession, which limits the amount of extra kids you will need to 'deal with' by half, no matter which one it is (98% of the game starts will have male-preferred, though with Daurama specifically there is an event you get in the first year where you can go female-preferred if you like).
Then you need to try to limit the total amount of kids you have. This can be kind of a deadly guessing game, since you don't want to necessarily marry a 16 year old and have a dozen kids to deal with, but nor do you want to marry a 38 year old and miss the chance to get your preferred gender heir. Strike a balance.
This usually means you'll end up with maybe 1-3 spare kids of your preferred gender. Now you have to get creative.
One way to kill them off is by forcing them to be knights, then getting them into retarded battles and trying to kill them. There is also a Dynasty Head mechanism to 'Disinherit' someone, though that costs renown and the use of it should be kept to a minimum (it's great if you're almost dead though and haven't been able to get rid of that one last pesky extra prince or whatever).
If your religion has the Monasticism tenet, you can force extra kids to 'take the vows' which will remove them from succession. If your religion has temporal clergy, you can appoint one kid to be your court chaplain, which will remove them from succession.
If you have the Sadistic trait, you're allowed to engage in hostile plots against your own close family, and can use Murder plots against them. If you're using the Dread mechanic and don't mind Tyranny because you've got Lifestyle choices that give you bonuses rather than penalties for being evil, throw the extras in jail and execute them.
There is probably close to a dozen different strategies to help manage your succession more smoothly, and I mentioned most of the most popular/easiest to achieve ones. Once you've mastered succession you can try some harder playthroughs like Daurama, but you're probably wasting your time until you have a better command of the basics.
still dont understand why they are so much worse at assassinations than my previous play thru's
i played the spanish sister and soon as i saw scheming to be her thing and her being Heir to multiple thrones it was a no brainer, took over most of spain from there.
