You do know that CK2 have 16 song packs (one is free) none of them are essential, they are there to offer you options, due to the nature of these songpacks, they obviously cost money.. personally however, I have been happy with a few of them (I also really like the Sabaton ones in HoI4)
Then you have some portrait packs, not essential either, but some of them gave me atleast, some good extra flavour for relative cheap cash (it is not like all release at once) often the flavour is spread out and dictated about what people wants. I wish I could tell you more about the process, but I would obviously not be allowed to for various logical reasons. Just understand that they focus on what customers want.
You also have a few ebooks (I am a huge long time fan) and even I don´t own those.
The only gameplay essential dlcs are the expansions, you get 1-2 a year on avarage and you pay on avarage 22 euro a year (25 euro, if you want abit of fluff as well) I think that is pretty cheap, for enhancing a already complete game with new "free" features and "extra" ones with expansions... because please remember.. you get the free update, no matter if you buy an expansion or not.
I personally did not buy various portrait packs (until they were on sale for a euro and I just wanted to see them, some of them is not even active) I also did not buy Sunset Invasion.. I had no interest, it did not hinder my game or gameplay, nor did I miss out on anything.. I did eventually get it, because again, huge sale... But the times I have used it or its features can be counted on two hands.
As someone who plays all of the Paradox grand strategies, the DLC is always worth its weight in gold.
The way I look at it, is by asking myself how much I'd spend on things I enjoy (movies or books, for instance, or a good meal), and how long I enjoy them... and looking at what I've spent on Paradox games and their expansions and content packs... and the thousands of hours I've spent playing them... damn if they're not some of the most cost-effective fun I've ever had...
DLCs cost money for us because it costs money to make them. Sweden has these terribly tyrannical laws called "labour laws" and they seem to be pretty stubborn about employees being paid in currency.
Sounds about right.
"FREE labor (applicants, yes that word exists, FREE), I will probably hire you."
It's because of the hindsight misconception that you do need the DLC to have fun. That the game is deliberately crafted to be a shell into which DLC will later be plugged one by one until it's complete.
It makes me wonder, if they released CK3 to rave reviews and didn't release any DLC for the next decade... Would the same people still call it an incomplete game?
You mean like CK and its one dlc?
Or what about Vicky 2 ? EU2 ? want us to keep going?

Still waiting for Sengoku to get literally one DLC.
