I guess this will pose a bit of a challenge for some people then. You need to level up your skill to get the scarecrow recipe but you can't level up if the crows keep taking your crops before you can harvest them. Fortunately, I only got 1 crow during 5-6 in-game days.
Also, IMO, the first (makeshift) scarecrow has a super tiny range of 5x5, and the better one is 11x11. Compared to Stardew's scarecrow that protects 17x17... I like to plant in 3x3 sections with a path in the middle, and this tiny scarecrow threw a wrench at my designs, lol.
That is not a great design... When you are already getting bird feeding on your stuff on day 3
I harvested 18 crops and did not get any level. I got 30 xp out of 120, that mens roughly I have to ahrvest 80 more crops... The bird will get VErrrrry fat.
ETA: it seems you get the experience during the night : I went from 30 xp to enough for elvel 1 120+ during the night. Got the scarecrow.
