Take for instance Lady Dindraine, why in the world would you give her a bow and not a crossbow?! Crossbow one of the best weapons for women, bow one of the worst.
Its not easy to feet women on the battlefield in a medieval setting and actually make sense.
I don't see the problem with the bow though.
There are several female characters across the mythologie, fantasy, legends and even in real life that were holding bows.
One of the best turn based games out there it's Wartales in my opinion (check it out in the store!) which also has a co-op mode that works well ( would be great to have in this game aswell). It is also mild fantasy and brings rather the realism of the medieval time.
In that game you can have any profession or class being male or female without being forced to have the one or the other in the process. :)
Wartales seems interesting, going to have a look at it later. That said, I would like more DLCs with single player campaign, don't need coop in this type of games, I like to play them by myself.
As for bows, its not that woman are not showed using them in different media, its just that to use a bow that is made for war, not hunting, needs a strong man. Otherwise, good luck even pulling back the string. I am no expert but I've seen video of how hard it is to use bows 100 lbs bows. Men who are objectively stronger then women, will make better bow users for obvious reasons. You also need a very strong bow to even go trough armor(and I don't mean plate, you are not getting trough that unless its a weak spot).
They can aswell add a mix of both.
However, even in movies you see that good bow users find spots they can place their arrows in vulnerable spots through good aiming cause otherwise they can't do any damage against a armored unit at all OR they have iron or a other type of hard metal at the arrowhead to be able to do damage .
That's of course mostly if they are the hero/heroine for the most part. ^_^
In other cases you see that they are rather just dropping a rain of arrows through several bow users from a higher place cause they wouldn't be able to do a good amount of damage on the same level and such.
As about Wartales you can play it either way and have a lot of fun.
I have some solo runs and saves myself while I also have a co op save with a friend. :)
As about the game being men based only because it's dark and atmospheric it's another illogical thought since corpses are corpses no matter what gender and witches and banshees are females too.
There's also two or three ladies of the lake (depending on whether Arthur gained Excalibur as a replacement for the original sword in the stone which he broke in battle with king Pellinor) before or after sir Balin murdered one of them in cold blood.
She would make a good arcanist or healer/buffer in the game. :)
Of course they could split them and include both in the game since Nimue is depicted more like a warrior with magical abilities while Vivien (or Viviene) was a pure Enchantress but it's up to them if they ever consider to add anyone at all anyway.
Maybe they even planning a second game that includes them, who knows?
