The only problem with Merlin as that he's so brokenly overpowered, compared to the other mages, that it feels like cheating.
Late game Morgana>Merlin have when it comes to vs bosses. Morgana tosses bosses like rag dolls. Merlin however literally makes all sages, except morgawse look like incomplete, obsolete characters. Together, these two can literally win you the game double handedly.

Go with Merlin and watch the world burn. Add Morgana to create the Fire & Ice Spectacular. It's a fun show. Then imagine your champion and vanguard emerging from the smoke and mist for the encore. Hurry though, the show's over in one turn.

When you read the forum during your first playthrough, it's OP.

I wish we had the choice between Merlin, Morgawse, and a marksman. It would be a much easier recommendation.

maybe its just me, but sages seem really bad since you only get 4 party slots. i really like the kit from what little bit ive seen, but its all support stuff that is just kinda whatever, and not important to have. sure id like to give my team some AP and a bless, but that seems pretty weak compared to just bringing another ranged character thats gonna do damage all fight and not worry about cool downs on buffs to be useful. they remind a lot of bards in DnD. they are really cool, and they are great to have in your party comp. but thats only if they arent taking up the slot of a real party member, and it gets its own support slot for the party.

I agree, Sages would make sense in a 5-6 char party, but with only 4 they don't add as much value than any other class does

Champion, arcanist, defender, sage. Great party.

Sages can work if you already have 1-2 characters all kitted out and can absolutely take on groups of enemies all by themselves and really need nothing other than a boost in AP and/or weapon dmg etc. Some people like to play it this way- like using Kay or whatever else dealing 1000% damage to anyone and everyone around. Other than that they fare pretty well in the lower difficulties. Once you unlock your more powerful champions/arcanists and or other classes who also have support spells and can also crowd control really well, sages become obsolete.

For me I always look at party composition. And most champions or defenders you unlock later already possess some kind of support spell to not warrant keeping a sage in the active rooster only to end up babysitting later.

You just described half the knights late game and post game. At the start of battle, any character in your party should be able to say, "Hey everyone, relax. I've got this."

A sage doesn't turn the tide nor does it make a party ineffective. Sages are fun. Bring one or not.

If you don't have a champion or a vanguard in your party, then maybe you shouldn't bring a sage. But a sage is more than just buffs.

If u think sages are not bringing enough to table u are wrong.THey are one of the best class in the game, coz of inspire and bless(best dmg buffs for u melee vanguard or champion),they also bring CC to the table. In good team u can clean up on very hard on turn 2,sometmes on turn 1 (if u dont use exploits or bugs).
