When you read the forum during your first playthrough, it's OP.
I wish we had the choice between Merlin, Morgawse, and a marksman. It would be a much easier recommendation.
I agree, Sages would make sense in a 5-6 char party, but with only 4 they don't add as much value than any other class does
Champion, arcanist, defender, sage. Great party.
Sages can work if you already have 1-2 characters all kitted out and can absolutely take on groups of enemies all by themselves and really need nothing other than a boost in AP and/or weapon dmg etc. Some people like to play it this way- like using Kay or whatever else dealing 1000% damage to anyone and everyone around. Other than that they fare pretty well in the lower difficulties. Once you unlock your more powerful champions/arcanists and or other classes who also have support spells and can also crowd control really well, sages become obsolete.
For me I always look at party composition. And most champions or defenders you unlock later already possess some kind of support spell to not warrant keeping a sage in the active rooster only to end up babysitting later.
You just described half the knights late game and post game. At the start of battle, any character in your party should be able to say, "Hey everyone, relax. I've got this."
A sage doesn't turn the tide nor does it make a party ineffective. Sages are fun. Bring one or not.
If you don't have a champion or a vanguard in your party, then maybe you shouldn't bring a sage. But a sage is more than just buffs.
