Yeah, the game seems to have some difficulty spikes that were never corrected from last year (unless is intended), but feels bad though. Some secondary quests are harder than mains, or even some battles inside the same quest are way tougher than others. For example, the quest of killing Sir Tewelyn has 1 previous fight at a bridge that is absolutely tough, and then the last fight vs final boss (Tewelyn) is easy.
I just finished a run on hard with the new patch, mostly using the same team comp and focusing on one damage dealer. The only times I was underleveled for a mission was for a morality knight recruit.
I'm wondering if you struggled because your heroes spent time healing instead of xping.
Im never above the level mission, always same or lower.
Well, i like to use mordred as a tank/cc dealer, either hector or merlin as aoe caster, a Sage for support and 1 off tank/dmg dealer like Sir Lanval, Fearie knight, white knight, Sir Lucan, etc.
Don't fight the boss, you can kill it by dealing damage to the special mage with 1 HP.
I beat it today with Mordred, Leodegrance, Bedievere and Morgana, it took a few attempts though (on very hard) as I missed the mechanic initially and didn't expect what happened next. Leodegrance can heal allies in 2 ways, Mordred tanked adjacent to boss and Bediever was main damage dealer running around the whole map as needed. Morgana was almost useless, but was great in other fights in the mission.
Edit. Minions attacked Mordred near boss and then Morgana used her AoE skill.
My mordred cant tank that much for sure. Not for that long. Maybe i can share tankiness with Sir Lanval, idk. But the problem is the rest of the minions are a lot and hard to kill.
Probably main problem is too low damage dealt by your team, then you should find some knight in your roster who can deal literally hundreds of damage per turn.
Mabye.. i dont have any other option. My rest of the heroes are healing. I just cant deal with mobs+boss. I send mordred to tank the boss and the rest to deal with mobs and the 1hp mage. But when i focus the mage the rest of the mobs start putting a lot of damage.
This is where i feel the game turns unfair honestly. It feels such a difficulty spike its impossible to overcome. I have replayed this fight many times, trying different strategies, but none work. The boss just freezes 3 of my team in 1 turn, while being inside of the red area aoe. Nothing i can do
Are you unable to win completely or just losing a knight? I had issues with act 2 boss, Merlin got 2 wounds and lost almost all vitality, so I switched to different knights and he is 3 levels below the rest now and I am not going to use him ever, it is almost the same as losing the knight. Not a big deal, we have 12 knights and also some aspirants waiting and resurrection scroll.

Sir Ector is a necromancer, not doing much damage but summoning minions to slow down mobs.
Lanval is slow and one of the worst champions in terms of damage.
Mordred is a meatshield with a bit of CC.
Faery knight is the one I do not know in your team since he got buffed.
Overall this comp seems to lack mobility and damage.
Ector's death hex is good for bosses, so you could try using that to surround and take down green knight before you get overwhelmed.
Iirc for this fight I used Mordred, Guinevere, Merlin and Boudicea. Boudicea buffed by Guinevere rushes to destroy the gates, Merlin and Mordred distract boss and remove armor, raged-up Boudicea destroys boss.
One could so something similar with a champion instead of Boudicea, with teleport ring for instance.
Icewall is also fun to exploit with one or two sages to trap freeze bosses.
