Use one of the bridge brothers to carry you through early game.
Don't invest on Kay and get rid of him when you have other options.
Do not use archers when you have other options.
Either build a very strong champion or vanguard to do most of your damage and support him with at least one sage buffing.
Play around with an arcanist if you feel like it for AoE damage.
Chase loyalty on all the heroes you play actively.

What exactly is so bad about Kay that makes him not worth using? I liked him more than Balan or Balin

No mobility on Kay. He used to be awesome back when you could stack AP on kill and get him full loyalty and rampaging fast. Now he's just slow and squishy.
Teleport ring helps him a bit, but it's once per encounter and holds a trinket slot.
He can do well in a small room, but is outshined by other champs.
Better options are Lancelot and Black Knight.

Aaah, fair enough. I have not gotten to either of those yet, still in act 1.

Advice about Kay is weird, I have sir Balan, sir Lanval and sir Kay and there is no significant difference between them except sir Lanval is clearly the worst because of limited healing in camps.

It will make sense when you progress further

I mean Lanval, all archers, Tristan etc. are worse than Kay, but you specifically mentioned just him.

I dont dislike Kay, but his "prefered" style is a defensive one. So if the rest of your party is focused on moving up and aggressively taking out targets, he will lose some of his specialty.

On the other hand, if you play defensively, he can act both as a tank(especially when he gets to tier 3) and damage dealer.

Also, Death Strike is awesome against targets with no armour.

Kei is an excellent knight, and not really different from other champions, they plus minus all are similar to each other, for example, the Knight of Spikes and Kei are almost identical, I can single out the Black Knight or Lancelot, they are really unique in their abilities and stand out from the crowd.
The rest of the tips are all to the point

Especially early in the game, he's a killing machine.

Pump two champions, two defenders, and two mages, it will be enough to comfortably pass the game, you can still pump assassin and archer, they will be good especially in the first stages of the game, plus they will diversify gameplay, even when there will be game events to send a certain class of knight on a mission, there will be someone to send.
Swing Ristalische and always train there a select few knights who do not participate in the sortie.
Always choose only in favor of tyranny or justice, the old faith or christianity, if you make the choice chaotically, will not unlock all the knights and bonuses and also undermine the loyalty of knights of the opposite faith.
Plan your battle tactics and study your opponents, they have both strengths and weaknesses.

It looks like your advice applies to single playthrough only. I use gifted (i.e. received due to morale/religion alignment) knights just for fun and replayability.

Kay doesn't need additional mobility. He's a champion, not an arcanist or vanguard. Kay is slightly worse than Balan at T3 due to the lack of an additional ranged AoE option, but is far more versatile until then due to Talented.

That said, I will agree that morality reward champions are some primo ♥♥♥♥.
