Impactful decisions?

I may start a dedicated thread because I couldn't get the answer to my question.

This seems to be a very long game, and even if there are several paths to choose (righteous/tyrant and christian/pagan) as much as I saw there were no actual differences in the actual story or the missions apart from some events/heroes to unlock/upgrades.
To add to that, the story is very confusing to say the least and I feel I don't have the required knowledge to choose on way or another.

So to my question: depending on your alignment, does the story actually changes at one point? Are there several endings? If so, is it a choice you can make at a certain time or are you railroaded into a certain path based on the alignment you invested dozens of hours in?
