Later on, when you meet sir Roderic, if you haven't learned this information from the Sacristan, then the cutscene goes straight into a fight. If you have learned this information it turns into a conversation with an option to fight, to challenge him to a duel, or to persuade him that you respect the place and he'll let you pass without a fight.
If you challenge him to a duel and manage to beat him then he'll order the four named foes in the final encounter to stay out of the fight and you only have to fight the minions. If you didn't beat sir Roderic in a duel then you get the really hard version of the fight (with the lighting bolts, poison clouds, magic shields that absorb hits etc).
I just had this version, but actually breezed through on hard with Mordred, Tristan, Yvain and Balan. The worst of it was Tristan taking 12 Vitality damage and having to sit a mission out to recover (with no injuries).

The real hell was the Sir Lancelot mission, there I really experienced pain

Duels is not only fight versus lost knight's and lanval.
It's battle mechanic.
U can read about it by ingame wiki.
Took the time to login just to reply to this massive piece of information.
The duel is pretty easy and removing those knights makes an absolute beast of a difference. I was pretty close to clearing it with them but would lose a knight doing so.
Also highly recommend 3 melee and Sir Ector (cause fireball) but truly just remove the 4 makes a crazy difference.
