Even though technically you can juggle between your choices base on whatever 'feels right' to you at that moment, it is strongly advised that you stick to at least one of the four quadrants instead of staying somewhat neutral in the middle. Otherwise you'll miss out the knight loyalty and overall bonuses that can help you throughout the campaign especially when played on higher difficulties and also the chance to recruit some of the more powerful knights.
Having that said, at times some of the morality choices have too big an impact either on the loyalty of your current roster of knights or coin and resources and force you to make a compromising decision. That's still fine as the campaign has enough morality points to max out one end of the morality paths.
Like this one, I have Merlin and Morgawse in the same team (normally you can't get both) and threw in Black Knight with Lancelot:

Yes, but one I made myself with some relatively simple editing of save files. I've played through the game a few times already so I wanted to just have fun with some creativity. Technically it is cheating I suppose.
I'd tell how I did it but I'm not sure I'm allowed to describe it in the forum, am I?
Then you have never used Gawain long enough. Gawain is the best Defender you can get in the game.
Thought so, most would say the red knight. It's ok.
Dont get me wrong, i respect your oppinion. Everyone can play the game like he wants.
The red knight for me is one of the worst defenders, for the simple reason that he is locked behind tyranny. If you dont play tyrany, you dont have acces to him. This is the reason why i rate every morality reward heros weaker then the one you can get always.
And in this case, Gawain is a beast.
Benefits of Faerie Knight:
Teleport
Skirmisher
Magical Armour
Dodge 30%
Ice Shield(One of the strongest defensive abilities)
Benefits of Sir Gawain:
Death Strike
Monster Hunter
Freezing Attack
The choice between an almost invulnerable sorcerer and an attacking defender. The Defender will always have very little damage compared to Champion and Vanguard, while his defense is not as strong as that of the Magic Knight.
But even so, Sir Percivale is doing better than Sir Gawain. The only one he will surpass is Sir Pelleas
When it comes to survivability, that is exactly the reason why gawain is better, because he isnt almost unkillable, is is immortal. The reason for that is easy, the feary knight relies heavily on his skills, gawain , as a defender, gets acces to the most regen items in the game.
Just to give you an example, the slayers oth is a defender only relic, that gives you 3 armor and 5 HP on a kill. Combine that with unyielding passive, a lvl 16 defender gets 5HP and 3 Armor for each kill and an additionally 5HP for each enemy hit.
And thats just one item, combine that with flurry, you can kill 3 enemys with one attack (taunt makes sure you never run out of enemys), so you get 9 armor and 30HP back.
The faery knight is a sage, he isnt supposed to tank, so he avoids dmg, the defender is a tank, his job is to get all the dmg, so the rest of the team dont have to.
Defenders have alot of this items, that lets them regen armor and HP.
I know, Mordred is required on alot of missions and it doesent make much sence to take another defender with you. Still, gawain is available in every game and can be used with all morality ways as he is neutral. Never needet a campfire again.
It is fine if you dont like defenders, for me they are great additions to the team, and as i dont like min/maxing, they are part of my strategy. A team is supposed to support each other, and gawain does a very fine job in that and i use him in every mission i dont have to stick with mordred.
I dont care about one turn victories or i would take merlin, morgana, boudica and as i have to mordred. Did this once, was boring as hell. Not much of a challange not much fun.
Personally, I like the freedom this game gives you in terms of options for your team and the way you can mix and match depending on your gear drops. I've never chosen Gawain but this time I will, just because. :)
I'm then going to test out a team with Mordred, Gawain, Galahad and some ranged DD. Or maybe 4 defenders just to see if it is possible to make it work.
The only issue I have is Mordred really. I don't dislike him but he is required for so many missions that the other defenders always have take the back seat.
I definitely liked Galahad though, that sound his ranged attack has just makes me smile every time I use it. It is like a Holy Grail moment.
And all the same, Faerie Knight is objectively better, he is mobile, truly invulnerable due to Ice Shield and stealth from teleport. On hard difficulty, if you take hits and don't quickly kill opponents, especially archers and magicians, you will be broken very quickly, regardless of the level of regeneration of your armor. The defender just doesn't work. But Ice Shield's will allow you to safely take dangerous blows.
It's good that you like the knight, but it would be unfair to say that in terms of his abilities he is better. As I said he is superior to Sir Pelleas and that is where his superiority ends.
And other important nuance, neutral knights practically do not develop morale, getting the highest bonus + 1 AP is very difficult for them.
