Playing multiplayer without a stable internet connection, after the servers go down, or keeping latency as low as possible.
That comment is just stupid, sorry.
Personally would just be happy with just offline mode where I could play the single player without having to deal with any live service stuff.
There isn't an internet connection in every room of every house. A LAN party takes up a lot of space so the dinning room is usually the place. Running a cable between rooms is not great and we can just forget WiFi. Even if its a strong access point cable will always be better.
Even with good internet and being US West chances are the actual server is somewhere in Michigan or US East so the ping is around 70ms+ which is garbage. LAN is 12ms or less. I know most people don't notice issues with ping below 100 but I've played enough PvP games (like Unreal Tournament) that it makes or breaks in precision timing.
Without PvP, does that really matter though?
If it is a problem, would it be possible to have a checkbox of the character to make them "unofficial"?
This way anyone who cares about cheaters can stay out of the ecosystem of those who don't. I mean I would not want to play with cheaters, however I play online with specific people and Lan party with those people also when possible. So restricting characters to Lan only seems like the wrong direction to freely use the characters we create.
Playing Titan Quest with mods like XMAX with friends is one of the best experiences in gaming I ever had. I wouldn't call that cheating as it makes the higher difficulties insane, but it does mean that you have altered files.
LAN is an insurance policy against the inevitable day that servers go offline. As long as there's LAN, multiplayer will be playable indefinitely. Plus, with LAN, you can do stuff like playing multiplayer in a place with bad internet or no internet, like on a train or out in rural areas.
