Strafe
Not being able to strafe feels really awkward.

So much so that I find my self using the right analog stick to strafe around an object only for the ship to do that weird little nudge or the total roll.

Feels like such a strange design choice to not have a basic manoeuvre like strafe in a game about space warfare, as arcadey as it is.

Would someone care to cast some light as to why such a decision was made? I'm literally moments away from getting a refund.

Hold Mouse Button #2 and turn to strafe, however once you engage your engine (releasing M2) you will go forward. The way the craft controls is a little different, but it is easy to use if you just give it some time.

I'm on controller, do you happen to know the buttons required on that?

Edit: holding M2 doesnt do anything. Pressing M2 and moving is the same is just moving for me.

Edit 2: Feels like a mobile game ported to PC. Just refunded it instead.

One of your buttons will make the wings of the ship extend out with electricity holding them on. That is the strafe button. It will allow you to drift around corners, bank and turn around on a dime. It is not a true strafe, like an FPS Game, but it is workable and helps in maneuvering and target acquisition. It is the key to staying on target, avoiding collision with objects and dodging enemy fire.

If you are looking for a game with a flat "strafe" like an FPS Game, try Descent or Overload.

I've tried all buttons on my controller, is this an upgrade you get later in the game?

I'm just after moving on the horizontal plane.

Just had to fire the game up with the controller to try it out. Hold the left shoulder button and you will enter into strafe mode. You will cancel out if you move side to side and do a barrel roll. But to see it, thrust forward, hold the left shoulder button and you will continue moving forward while you can turn and face any direction you want. Let off the shoulder button and you will instantly change direction to the path you are facing.

Once again, this is a bit different then a traditional strafe, but it is better for a game like this, since it is focused on dog fighting.

You'll unlock a drift option about an hour into the game, that will surely satisfy your needs for a strafe option! I can see where you're coming from! But hang in there and you'll see why it is the way it is :)

Before you get drift you can turn fast by slowing down.

Once you get drift it's not about strafing but about darting in and out of contact really quickly.

There's a drift button but it was super awkward for me, it doesn't work quite like a strafe. You have to be moving to use it, there's no traditional strafe.

I don't know about you, but a space-sim without the vertical and sideways movements... probably no banking either... I tried only the demo, so I don't know for sure, but if that's the case, it's really a dissapointment and not something I'd buy.

Coming from Freelancer the hardest thing to get used to is that A and D don't really give you much of a sideways movement, and you have to *hold down* the drift button to get drifting the same way as pressing Z once does in FL, after which pressing it again or hitting Tab disengages it.

The whole BIG SELL of this game is the ability to DRIFT. Any form of strafing would take away the uniqueness of drifting. A sad reason, if you ask me! This game does not even do drifting correctly! Space ships naturally drift if not "stationary!" You would need a lot of technology and energy just to keep a space ship from drifting while its changing direction. And, why does drifting SLOW DOWN your ship in the game? What happened to a little thing called, "conservation of momentum?" If anything, there should be a "RITE TO .STOP. DRIFT TRANCE!" What space battle game have you played lately that does not have drifting? So why is drifting so special and unique and requires a special "Rite power fragment" in Chorus? It's like buying a car and you can only steer the car AFTER you earned a special higher form of a mystical skill set and only after driving the car around for an hour or so.

Drifting will not go forever in Freelancer, either - there's a small space friction factor, from what I can tell. The Chorus game does seem to borrow a fair bit of game physics from that other one.

It feels to me almost like they transported drift from a car racing game
Nikanuur Sep 12, 2023 @ 12:43am
Drifting isn't strafing...
I can hardly argument with the developer's intent; ok, it's the way they meant it.
However, I for one won't buy such a space sim and I feel sad. Otherwise, the Chorvs seemed a cool game. Oh the woe! Someone please make Freelance III as if the 'II' had a prodigy baby already.
