Can someone tell me why Alex Mercer went off the deep end?

At the end of prototype 1 I recall Alex risking his life, most likely dying in the plan, to stop a nuclear bomb from killing innocents.

If I'm not mistaken, had he simply let the bomb launch while on the boat he would have been in a win-win situation, no one knows he's alive and everyone who would pose a problem for him would've died.

But he just randomly seems to go full evil in this game.

I don't think or know if im right but Mercer is no longer human. At the end of the first game, He is the only living form of the virus, i guess he either spreads it because he gets a god complex (Largely implied) or by mistake (i doubt completely)

I think that he simply became obsessed with his own power, and as YC said, developed a god complex.

in the last seconds of the game you see him drop a bomb the bomb blows him up and some of his biomass absorbs a crow and makes a new alex
it is unknown if the real alex is dead or not but who knows

There's a comic book that takes place between Prototype 1 and 2 that kind of explains his change of heart. But honestly the plot links between P1 and 2 are all over the place. They completely drop the PARIAH stuff from the first game, ignore half of the plot hooks they left over. Almost feels like a different story team.

Alex Mercer died in the beggining of the first game, he had a vial of the virus on him when he died and when he did die, the virus broke and came into contact with his body. So, Alex Mercer doesnt actually exist anymore, he's just the living enbodiment of the virus. He slowly but surely figures that out as the game goes on, at least that's how i understood it. So at somepoint between the first and second game, he just sort of looses whatever fragments of his personality the virus copied.

They had do sequel and had no idea how to do it proper way, so they far-fetched everything without giving a crack about how many plot holes and unjustified retcons they have.

this new mercer isn't anything like the old

A person linked up a brief summation of the comic that connects mercer from old to new, he was saving lives and everything, but found out that some of the people he saved were evil. Then a girl he fell in love with tried to kill him and he became evil.

It was lazy writing.
