Death & Saving
When you die, you are put back to the last place you or the game saved.

1) How do you know when the game saves?
2) What do you lose if you die?

1) It puts you back to the last time you saved at a campfire or the last autosave. Autosaves usually happen before fights right after a cutscene. I believe it also autosaves after fast traveling and maybe a few other moments that I haven't noticed.

2) Nothing but the time between your last save/autosave and when you died. There's no penalties for dying.

Autosaves from things like updated points in quests, and saving at campfires basically. Thankfully, there's sooooo many campfires, when ya just farming materials or achievements, you can save nearly non stop.

Thanks. Does the game tell you when it autosaves, like most other PC games or is the only way to tell by checking the save folder for any updates?

I just got killed for the first time by the Fire Bellowback during the Revenge of the Nora mission (Trapped myself in a corner and got fried) but it put me back to just before I blew the hole in the wall which was nice because I didn't want to have to sneak through the camp again so it's pretty forgiving and doesn't make you have to do long missions completely all over again .... I went in and looked immediately after it had me start over and it looked like there were several autosaves at different points .... one before you climbed in, another just before you assassinate the first enemies, again after the cut scene before you sneak across the camp and another just before you blow the hole in the wall

A saving icon in the corner would be great so you can see when it auto saves.

There is a save everytime you use the campfire, cut scenes when it is done. Most of the time when you are working on a quest and you finish part of the quest.

Autosaves can also happen after important combat encounters in certain quests -- allowing you to not have to replay the boss again or such.

This in particular was something I experienced when my game decided to crash on me 20 seconds into one of the final cutscenes of the main story of the DLC (right after the Fireclaw boss fight).

Good thing: I didn't have to redo the Fireclaw boss.
Bad thing: I lost all loot from the Fireclaw boss as world loot isn't saved between saves, so everything I picked up from that fight was lost.

Do not fall down when going thru Gaia Prime in "The Mountain that Fell", it puts you ALL THE WAY BACK and you have to climb everything again...
