Yup, experiencing this too. Sometimes just restarting the game and entering an area that was trash last time to find it actually runs fine for a while.
It depends too in the night day cycle, some zones change alot in performance with just a couple of hours ingame difference, even lookin super similar.
Its Playable and fine so far, but a totaly unoptimized Game.

The solution/workaround for "FPS tanking when entering cauldrons" is as follows:
Once you enter a Cauldron and FPS tanks (about half FPS).
Pause Game => Settings => Graphics => Set Textures to "Low", apply, then back to Ultra and apply again.
If it doesn't work try setting them to Low => Medium => High => Ultra and apply each time (it's instantaneous).
Got from 43 fps to 94fps on my RTX 2080.
You won't have FPS issues for the rest of the cauldron run.
This is a GAME BUG for sure.
For "raining villages" the performance drop is not so dramatic so I didn't test my workaround on those.
Really? It stays a consistent 60fps most of the game.
If i set Texture Resolution to Low then i get 100+ FPS, anything else and it drops to 10.
I've always suspected Guerilla cranked up the graphics and textures inside cauldrons to really emphasize how "old world" and different they are from anything an ordinary person in Aloy's world would ever see.
So I guess in terms of actual gameplay when translated to PC, this probably messes up texture unloading/reloading or general rendering somehow and the workaround fixes that by basically making the game refresh assets.
I figured out this myself before reading the comment, but replying for visibility. This is the bizarre solution to this problem.
