Modding her face
So you guys think it's possible to mod Aloy's face to look like she was supposed to look before the "realistic" uglyfication?

Edit: It's just a different philosophy. In design, one should strive for aesthetic perfection(no its not subjective, if you think it is, you have no idea what you're talking about and that is fine too), make reality beautiful through the power of imagination. The other side of this coin are the people who try to find beauty in realism itself. It just doesn't work very well for many people. So i say no to another postmodern take on what beauty is supposed to be. No thanks, that's dumb. I can only see a game that hops on the Zeitgeist bandwagon and i rather want to watch pretty people for 20+ hours and not some ugly dude or chick.

How moddable is Death Stranding?

Do you have any before and after images? I am not familiar with any changes like that.

If it helps, this is the actress that Aloy was modeled after:

This is Aloy:

Hannah Hoekstra, the model for Aloy, exudes femininity in virtually every picture she is in. In comparison, and in my own opinion (yours may vary), Aloy seems very androgynous. I see the similarities to Hannah Hoekstra, but Aloy definitely doesn't look identical to her.

Thank you for the clarification and the images. I was thinking the OP meant from the PS4 version to the PC version, there were changes.

To me, Aloy in the game looks more rugged, like someone growing up in that kind of environment may look (a bit dirty, sun burnt, ect). And there is only so much you can do with game graphics, so there may be been some other limitations involved, I would assume.

As it is a single player game, it is likely someone may make a mod, but that doesn't mean that it will work well or look right in the game, but that is simply subjective.

I agree that beauty is subjective, and I see what you're saying about the differences in her appearance due to the world/environment that she is in. While I don't particularly care for the way Aloy looks in this game, that certainly didn't prevent me from buying the game (again). If there's a mod that comes out which makes her look more like I want her to look - great. I like realism in games up to a point, but I certainly don't want to play a fictional game where the character I'm playing as looks as bad as I do. I play games to escape my life. :steamhappy:

Character modelers also don't have to recreate a VA's features at all when they model the character. They usually do so because it is easier to mimic the expressions and mouth movements of the VA as a reference when animating, but that's not a hard rule, and more common in 2d/3d TV/film animation than in game animation.

Aloy's scanned actress and her VA are two different people

She looks a tad potato in the face. It's uncanny and I don't like it. I put the likelihood of a new model very high since assets are usually fairly easy to extract and put back in. The 'putting back in' part might end up being fairly difficult but that's rare. I'm sure there's a lot of wonky models and textures that people are going to want to fix. I expect it to happen but if the cutscenes are pre-rendered, it might pour cold water on it.

afaik, there are quite a lot prerendered cut scenes (that's one of reasons game is so big)...

haven't played the game, but from what I saw on youtube it looked like they were mostly rendered in-game. admittedly I haven't seen much of the game, I was hoping it would be like Witcher 3 but that might be too much wishful thinking.

They do the same thing Naughty Dog does with their games like Uncharted or TLOU. Cutscenes are in-engine but pre-rendered, mostly to allow for more dramatic action/higher fidelity without straining the hardware. Also cutscenes use higher detail "hero" assets.

I didn't get why Americans are so obsessed with realism, realism is boring 🤷
Also this is a fantasy game, what a good idea to insert a realistic character in a fantasy world, really mind-blowing
I hope we can get a better looking main character, I like cute girls

Aloy looks good to me /shrug

Even if you don't think she is attractive looking, who cares? Just play the game.

It will be possible but will take time to modify her face with a decent quality, this engine is very new on PC and just came now with Death Stranding. People did Julia Voth's face to replace the actual model on Jill's face of Resident Evil 3 but her face already was present on others RE games.
