The low ones can be handy if you need to do a Season daily that requires doing critical hits.
You don't stay sane long with those.
As far as performance enhancing chems go you need to avoid them if you want the feral melee boost.
Use Mutations, foodbuffs, magazines and bobbleheads if needs be.
My Feral uses a sub-optimal autoaxe and is able to match the melee damage of my smoothskins that use a Furious Pounders autoaxe.
It's a carnivore that uses glowing meat steaks but doesn't need to.
Which means it can solo the Guardian when Feral without Furious pounders.
It's just a bit quicker if it has a steak.
