A camp produces in serial, meaning it creates one at a time.
A workshop produces in parallel meaning all production items produce at the same time.
For example:
My camp has 3 small water purifiers with max storage of 2 each, meaning it will make 6 water, but one at a time (which is 1 every 5 minutes?) which takes thirty minutes to produce the 6 water.
A workshop with the same three purifiers would create 1 water in each, and fill up in 10 minutes producing the 6 water.
The same applies to crops, if you notice in your camp if you place 3 razorgrain they grow back one at a time. However in a workshop they would each grow back at the same time.
Yeah if you really want to do this can suggest a private server (fallout 1st)
It counts as pre-war food and candy for the score board challenges, and barely weights anything either, so yeh if you can slap one down, same with those nuka cola candy dispensers you can also build, they both count as pre-war food and candy as well, and they do not take power so are better, though the amount of food they give is pretty meh, but as they are candy rather than food that does make sense.
