I'm a new player too, level 103. About a month in to it, since the summer sale. I had imagined this game would have some starter fluff missions to acclimate the noob to the mechanics, and then we'd be left to our own devices, doing public events and running around in PvP.
But it is not that at all, at least not any more. This is a full-blown single player game set in a multiplayer world, and the balance between the two is in a really good place for me. I can mostly do my own thing, and then join friends or public events as the mood strikes.
The map is four times the size of the Commonwealth in FO4. It's not so densely packed as FO4, but still it's a great map for exploration. For the sale price it's certainly worth a punt to see how you like it.
Like 95% of the game is solo. The only exceptions being events and boss fights. If you try and do normal questing while on a team, you either join the leaders instance when entering someplace (and so progress his quest), or you go in alone (and progress your quest). The majority of the game isn't really made to work with multiple people on a team trying to do the same quest.
This is less of a multiplayer game and more like a single player game that just happens to have some other people running around. (There isn't even any communication between players aside from emotes and voice chat. No text communication or mail.)
I'm exploring and I bumble into someone's camp. They wave hi to me, and we go on our way.
I went to a Nuka World event with people in power armor who killed all the monsters for me, that was handy
So can this game just be installed/played without anything [for solo]. Just hit play and go?
Again last i played i was on the private server
Theres Atoms & Fallout 1st. Atoms are like currency and Fallout 1st is a Sub that gives you more stuff?
You do not need a subscription (a Fallout 1st membership) to play this game. Once you have bought the game itself, you can play through everything for free.
Atoms are this games premium currency, used to by things on the in-game shop. And yes, Fallout 1st is a sub that gives you some benefits while active (mainly, unlimited junk and ammo storage boxes, but also a tent you can place down that acts as a small base with a stash box, plus an amount of Atoms given to you each monsth).
So Fallout 76 is still a MMO basically; and there is the ability to play this game solo
But buying a Fallout 1st "Subscription" allows you to create a private server making the entire game 100% singleplayer basically.
Just installed, and launched and realized thats what was going on. Also I didnt know (i play a lot of games) that my character made in the Private Server allowed me to enter the non private server; nice!!!
If ure looking for stories and that kind of stuff i really recommend the older games of this franchise.
