If you are linked correctly, look at the display name shown on the bethesda.net profile section? Does it show the name you see in game?
When bethesda.net added steam as an official launcher, with the linking, they initially defaulted people a long letter/number GUID ID. At some point in time, they determined that was a bad way to get people to interact in game. So they changed everyone who had not set a display name from the number/letter combination to a pattern of “adjective” + “bethesda race name” + 4 to 5 digit number. So people who connect now get a name like “depresseddunmer4311” or “exultantbreton12345”. (Names I just made up so if they actually exist, apologies.)
Change the display name to what you would like people in game to see.
on bethesda.net it says i am not linked to my steam and when i tried to link it failed, also my display name i changed myself to match my steam name and yet in the main menu it still shows up as the "odd" username thankfulzombie18025 however when trying to send the email verification code via fallout76 i receive no code yet my bethesda account and steam account have the same email so i do not known where it is being sent and i cant seem to find a way to log out in fallout76
You need to find that randomly generated Bethesda account and rename yourself there.
How would i be able to do that without the email or password for that account?

What do I do if I have forgotten my Bethesda.net account username?
If you forgot your username follow the instructions below:
Go to your account page ---> https://accounts.bethesda.net/en/manage-account
When prompted to log in, select Help find my account.
Provide your e-mail address when prompted.
Select Send email.
Check your email for an email providing your username.
If you do not have access to, or cannot recall your email address, contact Customer Support ---> https://help.bethesda.net/#en/home/product/711/cat/16/question/860
sorry to be confusing but i only have 1 email and thats the bethesda account i created so sending the email will give me the account i know i have, i meant how can i find the details to the randomly generated account
ah okay will do, thank you for the help :)
You have a steam account liked to a bethesda account and you have no idea what the email address is. All is not lost, and all is not at the mercy of the bethesda support wonks.
At some point in time, you created a bethesda account, possibly by using the creation club, or some other bethesda game. When asked, you gave it one of your throw away email addresses, or just made one up “because why do I ever need this account”.
Step 1). In the steam store, find Doom 64. It’s cheap, sometimes free.
Step 2). Buy and install the install it.
Step 3). Load the game.
Step 4). Once inside the game, you will see an option for “bethesda.net.”
Step 5). Chose that option. It will show you the email address that was used to link Steam and Bethesda.
step 6). If you still have access to that address, you can then log in to Bethesda.net with that email address. It will probably require you to reset the password.
Step 7). You can now use that account to modify the display name etc.
Step 8). Refund Doom 64 because you have played it less than two hours.
If you do not have access to that email address anymore, then you will need to submit a support ticket and they can walk you through things.
Only times this has not worked is when the person didn’t have access to the email account anymore, or, when they input the email address they fat fingered something. One guy here had put in #gmail.com instead of @gmail.com. That required Bethesda’s assistance.
okay so really annoying, turns out i fat fingered it n missed the L in gmail when i did it :/
Open a ticket with Bethesda and they can fix it.
Be advised that once you open a ticket, do not go back to it asking for updates until they send you an email. Any update requests pushes it to the end of the line.
