Also, while not everything here has a claim to 100% perfect truth, Wiki is your friend:
https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/.50_cal_machine_gun
It's one of the "very much fewer" options weapons, it's still a staple I use in both my heavy builds.
Heavy barrel and prime receiver is about it. I've scrapped a lot more than that and only have those 2.
You get a free legendary .50 cal machine gun called Final Word, which has 50% anti-armor effect, at the end of Beckett's ally quest line. You can craft your own legendary version, but with random legendary effects.
It doesn't really matter because the .50 gun is not among the best weapons, mainly due to lack of mod options. I loved it at low and mid levels, but have since moved on to better weapons with a lot of mod options, like The Fixer, Auto Axe, Cremator, etc. So if he is going to use the .50, using it at level 35 is best.
Possibility to specialize with VATS, but it needs many other perk cards and a reserve of fusion cores ... . May want to have a MG .50 Cal with some "critical shot" related attributes ... .
Another problem with it is that while the original version had very good hip accuracy it was changed (nerfed) at some point. I don't recall the time frame involved.
I started out with a heavy gun build and switched to rifle build due to having a gauss TSE. When I later went back to a heavy guild build, I found the 50 cal to have absolute garbage accuracy.
Edit: If ammo usage isn't a issue for you, a LMG is a far superior weapon.
Do not listen to anyone saying it is not worth getting at Lv 50. If you like using the 50 cal itself and the easy ammo crafting etc, it is very worth getting.
Yes it is kind of a silly statement. Nothing wrong with comparing things from different categories if it is done right. Reality is that for heavy gun options there is not a lot wrong with the 50 cal, it is a very solid weapon. If you are fully spec into heavy gunner you should like the Final Word.
I use two 50 cals on my PA heavy gunner. Bloodied, 25FFR and Bloodied, Explosive for tagging. My plasma caster, Gatling plasma, holy fire and ultracite gatling laser are great as well but i end up using my 50 cals a lot.
