Do you need a devoted build to use Auto Axe?
I was planning to use it to complement my heavy guns build without any perk devoted for it. Would it be useful or just be a wet noodle this way?

if its a side arm for specific scenarios and with it being buffed should be fine with right mods on it, would only need a devoted build if you were maining it I.E. slugger

You don't need a specific melee build for the Auto Axe, but there are some that are going to come in here and tell you that you have to use an unyielding bloodied build with Power Attacks and strength bonuses to get the most out of the build. Others that don't like unyielding bloodied builds will tell you to go Full Health instead (Overeaters Power Armor).

action boy, ap food of any kind, it eats ap.sameish for most ranged weapons though in vats.

nah - anything for AP regen is fine but it functions as a sidearm with nothing else. Chainsaw, too. What the previous posters mentioned was spot on. I just wanted to add that the legendary prefixes are most important.

Vamps recommended and fully mod em if it's chainsaw (dual, flaming) for side arm, Anti Armor for a more frequent use, *and obviously bloodied for half-dead builds

Boosted weapon break reduction means you don't have to equip stable tools.
Additional power attack or Power Attack Defense are good in theory.

I'd like to add I play full HP power armor as well. Also regarding AP, I have access to company tea and coffee so it shouldnt be a big issue. My idea was to use it to kill bosses and elites with an anti armor roll or something. My main weapon is holy fire with base rolls (best roles imo), cremator with slow burn for event tags and a ultracite gatling laser for scorchbeasts.

Incisor perk should be fine if it applies to auto. Stick a mod on the Auto axe and test it on some scorched mobs to see with and without some perks. The difference in kill speed should only be a second or two. I'd stay with vamps if you're already using the HF

I always have my Auto-Axe in a slot, for those pesky DO's with "Kill with melee", and chopping up shards at Titan. Nothing required but the weapon itself.

You can use a slugger build (full health or bloodied are both op), best auto axe is vampire with +40% power attack damage ( for +40% free extra dmg when spun-up) and you good to go, any armor and power armors are of your choice but i'd recommend for bloodied to use unyielding with strength or full health overeater/aristocrat with strength.

Having a high str always helps as that is the main modifier for its base dam output. And if you use mutations then carnivore and the food buffs when used in a party can make the auto axe shockingly effective against bosses.
As for mods go electric

Twisted muscle and carnivore are goat for auto axe, especially with the tasty meat recipes that could rise up to 213% with strange in number for melee dmg. You'll wreck all bosses on your own (i do and on full health too).

Trust me, that autoaxe will CHEW UP legendary scorchbeasts when they land during their attacks. As long as you have the Vampire perk to keep your health up, and good AP regen, you can stand toe-to-toe with any boss in the game.

Just tested my full health melee build with the auto axe on the new goliath boss and it's easy work, just saw their legs apart.

I went all in with all the melee/strength perks. That plus Overeaters T65 PA and it's pretty easy.
