The dog from fallout 4 was the absolute worst companion due to pathing issues and always being underfoot. When they introduced them to this game I just laughed and said no thanks.
Um, I had no such issues with Dogmeat runs.

To do that you have to stand around too, usually while building I guess.
I put a bunch of leaf piles around my camp to create a patrol route for my dog, it doesn't really work... (I miss that feature from FO4 as it added some life to a settlement).
On the plus side the leaf pile is good for stopping vegetation and rocks from appearing in the camp zone.
They modeled that behaviour after one of the devs' dog.
