If instead you are wanting to put that coffee pot you found in the refuge oit in your camp you will need to use a display.
Put an item in and when in CAMP mode anything taken out can be placed like other items.
Take an item out when not in Camp mode and it's normal.
Using merging techniques (I avoid them as they are glitches) you can use it to place items on top of tables or in shelves etc.
It's a finicky workaround and prone to bugs itself. The reason we can't manually place junk items is due to physics.
The physics in this game are handled client side. Any lose object is rendered individually and isn't always shared. Where one person sees that junk can be a totally different place to another.
Because of this variance item manipulation was removed, it's less immersion breaking that way.
