Usually goes like this: Spend months gathering ammo a few shots at a time from world spawns/mobs. Get bored of PA heavy lifestyle and mix it up with on foot heavy. Burn through gathered ammo in 1-2 events. Go back to gathering for a few months.
It can be more economical to convert to Ultracite rounds but I'm hesitant to suggest that. One because contextual ammo often bugs out, and two because standard .308 can be found in world and produced in ammo maker/converter.

Automatic fires more than one bullet per click.
Rifle uses a stock. Pistol uses a grip. Except Handmade is always Rifle.
Heavy is anything shot from the hip, along with LMG and Cryolator.
Explosive is any weapon that hits for all of listed damage as explosive.
Notable exceptions are Hellstorm (Half Heavy, Half Explosive) and Pepper Shaker (Half Shotgun, Half Heavy)
Just mentionning the gauss minigun, a heavy weapon that uses energy type ammo with bullets that explode (not an explosive legendary, just a natural effect of EC 2mm ammo) ;)
The Dragon is a rifle.
