How do you lock things
When visiting other camps, I sometimes see that they have locked doors or scrap collectors or whatnot. How do I do that? Does it cost additional resources depending on the tier of lock I put on it? Does someone automatically get tagged with a bounty if they pick the lock, or is that a separate option? Sometimes the locked containers I see have red text, but sometimes it's white, implying the red one carries additional consequences.

you succeed in break a lock = you get the wanted status

someone breaking your lock, makes them wanted
and you have to re-lock that object

In the build menu for the camp or workshop, select the item you want to lock, and you will see an option at the bottom that says "Lock".

You can then pick the level of the lock you want to apply. From No lock to Lock 3.

Each rank of lock difficulty requires additional resources to craft.

If a player picks a lock that you have set. They will be flagged as "Wanted". Once flagged, they can't see other players on the map, and have the big red wanted flag over their heads.

The only way to remove the flag is to die at the hands of another player. Wanted players can be attacked and killed without involving any sort of "hand shake" between the two parties. By getting the flag, you have waived that particular right.

If someone picks your lock, you will have to put it back, which costs the same resources as the original lock placement.

Locks at player camps show (red) when a player interacts with it. Red in that case means you will be wanted.

Locks at player owned workshops (white) will also give you a wanted flag if you pick the lock.

Any locks at unowned workshops, or out in the world in general show white and picking them does not give you a flag.

re-lock means a small cost from your resources

Do you really hate your fellow Vault Dwellers that much not to share?

Sure you were stuck in there together for 25ish years, and everyone left you passed out while they got a head start on the plundering of Appalachia (be grateful you didn't wake up with a marker moustache or worse).

Timmy was a jerk and Mabel didn't want to talk to you but is it enough to hold a grudge?

Ahhhh ok. When typing this question I suspected the "lock" button when placing items might have been related. For the longest time I assumed the lock function "locked" it to a grid to make aligning things easier or to prevent you from moving it on accident. I figured it was one of those tools to make things look fancy, but it makes sense that it literally puts a lock on your stuff. I would probably just use rank 1 locks since anyone who cares about lockpicking either has 3 perk ranks anyway or has the infiltrator legendary perk. The point seems to be that there's any lock at at all, which would discourage people who don't want to be tagged as wanted.

If you leave the server while wanted, are you still wanted when you join a new world?

btw
locking doesn't really stop a thief looking to steal

i mean the wanted price on your head... 5-10 caps
anything you get to snatch is worth more than that most of the time

if i needed to quickly do a challenge like collect 10 purified waters...
i'm sorry
but just gonna break lock on your water purifiers and be done with it

Honestly it's not so much keeping people out of my stuff. It's knowing whether my junk collectron had been picked through and all the good stuff removed or if it was just a low quality day. The price on someone's head being only 5 caps is not enough to go out of your way to hunt them down... but if they automatically take damage from other players, then events, expeditions, and daily ops will likely require them to die at least once and return to their body, which is an annoyance. There's also the fact that any scrap on their body can be looted before they get back. That's not to mention the steam achievements and atom rewards for killing a player and a pacifist player will never get a better opportunity than if a bounty walks past them. I don't speak on behalf of everyone, of course, but if you need my stuff that badly to go through that and I don't have it in my personal stash, then you're free to it.

That reminds me that I ought to put my vintage water coolers out front, especially if collecting purified water is part of a daily. I remember when I was level 10 or so and came across my first camp. I was literally dying of dehydration and I thought their rain water collectors with dirty water was the most precious thing in the world. I felt guilty for taking 4 bottles to get me by. I didn't know at the time that you could collect it from the river without a container. In fallout 4 survival it required a new bottle each time you gathered water.

hmm...

nah

btw what i said is meant as in general
nobody cares about your locked purifiers
it resets quite quickly

But if i were to have only 10 min before daily reset ... i just break in
then i transport to my boathouse
go in the shelter
and wait for the few brave that want to collect that 5 caps bounty

but personally... i just drink the poop water
i'm a Doc, trust me

Put your collectron in a box
no doors
Dr. Nim Saj Jan 15, 2023 @ 8:29am
box= 2 blocks
place collectron on the blocks
cover it with walls and roofs

when you return , simply remove /store a wall
grab your loot
place wall back on

Oh privacy did disappear, no police to enforce boundaries you see. Raider Punk says it best "Can't get much privacy in Crater these days.".

Besides, having locks is what will cause Grahm and wandering traders to get aggro from your turrets. Something about the locks bugs out the faction assignments to be hostile.
