Fallout 76 having issues / hard locks using an AMD 9070xt
Hello there,

I have recently put in a XFX Radeon 9070xt and most games are running great in linux. Falllout76 has been great and still is on my steamdeck (LCD ver). The game starts no problem, click on start, choose a normal world.

Game starts until the graphics are about to 'kick in' / load my character / scenery. Then i see about areas about 1 inch accross maybe half an inch tall. It locks. wait till it lets go and i get get back to steam and stop the game. I've tried hotfix, experimental and 9.04.

Currently I'm using Kubuntu 25.04. Kernel 6.14 and Mesa 25.0.3-1.

I've done a full verification of the files as well.

No go so far. Cyberpunk 2077 runs at ultra settings with ray tracing. Doom Dark Ages runs at 144fps when using ultra / 1080p.

fo76 is based on code written back in 2000 (Even before that maybe lol) so it does NOT play well with new gen stuff.

Try running the game in compatibility mode (pick 98 if u can, xp if otherwise) and try running it again. (Also try running game in admin, but u will have to go to properties in the actual fo76 exe and set to run as admin, can also do the compatibility mdoe there too)
Might as well try Vista or Windows Me while your at it-never know, I loved windows Me and used it up until 2018. I would use my Commadore 64 but no room for the down load, Sey.

This sounds like a configuration issue. Delete the Fallout76prefs.ini file and let the game rebuild it with default settings.

Man same problem with Windows 11 Nvidea 4070 super. I have tried prefs.ini, window malicious software tool, every graphics recommendation, complete reinstall game, complete removal of GPU software and drivers, fresh install. No problems with other games . IDK driving me crazy. I actually get an error in event viewer \Device\Video3
Error occurred on GPUID: 100 which is a nvidea thing.
Even checked ram health, having a problem for like a week now. play for 0-70 minutes with freezes/crashes at random

Windows 11 Home
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-14700KF
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER
32GB Memory

Just my 2c, for me have mostly used 2 systems, one Intel/Nvidia one AMD/Nvidia. Have only had issues on the Intel system, such as hard lock, game freeze, stutters and just garbage performance. Both are Win 10, the AMD box has 4070ti and is stable...seems the supers are more prone to issues. The Intel had swaps from 3060 to 5060ti and back, new drivers just seemed to have issues and reverted to older driver with 3060 onboard. Too many cooks in the kitchen with OS, GPU and games patching all the time.

Fallout 1 and Fallout 4 play just fine. The issue is with Fallout76. The only change between working Fallout76 and Not working was replacing my video card.

I gave this one a try despite being a fresh install. I was rewarded with a hard lock black screens, capslock doesn't work nor numlock.
Does your motherboard have any options in regard to PCI-E slot such as setting 4.0 or perhaps resizable bar on/off? Even a ram setting....

Resizable BAR is on, ram is set to 3200 xps profile.

IS anyone else here running fallout76 on linux (which flavor if it's working?) with the AMD RX9070 XT successfully?

I'm running on an RX 9070xt and it works fine but I did have to tweak it a little. I'm using Bazzite 42. With ProtonPlus I got GE-Proton10-1. Most other version of proton didn't work. Proton 8.0-5 works but not well.

With that the game will load but I got a black screen when it started up. To get past that I had to edit the Fallout76Prefs.ini iPresentInterval=0

I Managed to solve the issue. AMDs site says it only supports Ubuntu 24.04.x and not 25.04 yet for the RX 9070XT. So i got that.

Installed Kubuntu 24.04.2 LTS (You can use Ubuntu plain if you prefer Gnome)
Installed kernel 6.15 via mainlines app
Installed steam client via the website (NOT SNAP!)
Used the kisak-mesa repo to install Mesa-25.1.1

startup steam
Install Fallout 76. choose 'hotfix' as the comparability.
You can also use Proton 9.04

Fallout 76 is now running for me on my RX 9070 XT.
Overkill really is the exact right amount of kill.

Thanks for your replies and help sorting this out.
