I like both, but having a lot of fun in F76
Fallout 4 is what brought me into fallout (not really, I started with 3; but I never played it as much). The story is alright, and it definitely has at least 4 times replay-ability if you wish to try each factions story line. The world of Fallout 4 was always too drab for me to believe so I always mod it until no rock goes unpainted. Its a far better experience with mods, but imo you should absolutely buy fallout 4.
Fallout 76 is the black sheep of Fallout, as much as I love it I know all the faults of this game and the developers. I have been playing since the B.E.T.A. and If you were to compare the stories together, Fallout 76 beats 4. The story to me is way more interesting that just "find ur son lmao". The world is so much nicer than 4's drab wasteland. I was always a firm believer that Mother Nature would reclaim the world after the nukes, so seeing Green in a Fallout game is wonderful.
The negatives towards 76, and why you should probably start with 4.
I love 76, but to start with it and go onto 4 is cutting QoL features from you. It may stain your experience with both games. Not to mention the FOMO that goes on with events, seasons, and other updates that 76's foundations lie on. Overall, 4 should be your starting point and if you wish, go onto 76.
Fallout 4 is 60% off @ $7.99
Fallout 76 is 75% off at 9.99
BUY BOTH!
Side missions and DLC are both great in each game.
I love the events, building my camps/shelters, legendary collections, and just screwing around in FO76, and it is one of my top two favorite games; however, the story lines put me to sleep.
I wish I could get a FO4 ported into F076's engine with FO76's legendary system.
Overall, I like FO76 better and have way more play time (well over 1k hours if Xbox included), but I enjoy FO4's story more.
As a 'Fallout' game FO4 is terrible... yet many don't see that and like the mod-ability to make it what they want (someone who mods a game doesn't actually like the game the developers delivered).
After FO4 I vowed never to play another Bethesda game again... then FO76 had a free trial...
FO76 is/was bleak. It was a true post apocalyptic world where you were the only survivor (Millennium Man, I am Legend). That changed to the more unbelievable 'so many survived' over time with updates.
But the map full of exploration opportunities, the colour palette of greens, the different biomes were far better than the drab greys and browns of FO4.
FO76 to FO4 was a much different experience that I could forgive Bethesda (lasted a few years) for their prior games and enjoy something new.
If the choice with hindsight was between FO4 and FO76 and nothing else, hands down FO76. If the choice after all these years with both included something else, something else. FO76 is in a tailspin that I don't think Bethesda can pull out of.
pretty similar but with 76 you have better inventory management and it is the better one in the longer terms
