[SOLVED] Yesterday: Started Experiencing Problems with Player Character Stuck in Game
I've been experiencing freezing player character movement within the last two days during which I have made NO changes to my system. I simply went from moving about correctly in game, to yesterday when I began experiencing some weird character freezing behavior.

I can reliably reproduce it by entering the White Springs Mall entrance, and then running into the arcade with all of the benches. When I stop moving, my character becomes stuck in place. I can jump, jet pack, and crouch, and fast travel, I just can't move from my spot. Sometimes by jumping up and down, I can move again, but it consistently reoccurs making the game unplayable.

It appears to happen mostly indoors. I was similarly stuck in the Overseer's house yesterday, and I was able to move again because I was close enough to initiate playing the piano, after which I was close enough to sit in another chair in her living room, and then I was able to move and go downstairs.

I've opened a support ticket with Bethesda and of course done all of the normal troubleshooting. Drivers are up to date, and it's not an issue with my Xbox controller, I've tried two different ones, as well as tried keyboard and mouse. It isn't a mod issue, and I've verified the integrity of the game files multiple times.

It feels like this is happening more on the server side, similar to, (but not exactly like), when you momentarily lose server connection and your game is frozen..

Is anyone else seeing this?

Not had any issues myself, have you tried to fully uninstall the game, delete all the config files in documents etc. and reinstall the game? It could be some setting messing things up from a loose config file somewhere (fallout76custom, fallout76prefs?). Do note, if you delete a mod, make sure to delete all traces from it from those config files as well, even if the file is gone the setting changes can cause big issues.

Thanks you!

Deleting the fallout76prefs.ini file appears to have solved my problem.

I'll continue testing to make sure. I just find it odd that a file that I never directly edited, could include some setting that would impact player movement in this way. Strange..

Cheers..

I was finally able to discover the issue with my player character movement freezing periodically. The issue was with the display setting.

If I play FO76 in Borderless Window mode, my player movement is as expected and there is no unusual movement disruptions.

If I play FO76 in Fullscreen mode, my player movement will periodically freeze in game. The most consistent, repeatable, version of this involves running into the White Springs Mall and into the store with all the workbenches, and then stopping. At that point my player character can no longer move laterally in any direction. I can jump up and crouch down, but I cannot move otherwise. Sometimes I can unstick my player character by jumping up repeatedly, but my player character will simply freeze in another part of the store.

Obviously for me, I have to play my game in Borderless Window mode for the time being. I am curious if anyone else, with an NVIDIA GPU, has experienced this issue as well.

Have you disabled full screen optimizations, ran as admin(both steam and FO76) and gave high priority to 76? It's what fixed it mostly for me and setting shadows in the prefsini. To 30000 instead of the low 60000 setting improved the game a lot. I still get server stutters(seems like not much can be done about that), but mostly am ok. I had the opposite where my game ran like a slideshow in borderless windowed

Thanks for the suggestions but I haven't tried any of them, because the switch to borderless window solves my problem, (at least for now). The game works as expected, so I'm not inclined to test it any further to get full screen mode to work. If I start to experience further issues, I'll have to dive into these things, but for now, I'm using the easy way to keep the game playable.

If it's not an issue that could easily be resolved by adjusting Nvidia/ accounting for it updating could you please post a video, OP?

Expecting players to re-install for a simple bug sets a fairly excessive precedent likely to cause future visitors some unnecessary effort. I'd like to see if we can't find an easier solve for you :VBOY:

I have several issues and i dont think they will ever be fixed because some of these are from years ago lol. I freeze all the time entering my PA ill be stuck outside of it and i cant move so i sit for about 2 minutes and sometimes itll continue or i have to hard quit because when the game freezes it really freezes. I have issues with my PA exploding into pieces all over the ground when travelling ( i can see my pieces ) but yet my PA is fine? like i said nothing will be fixed because lets face it they dont fix stuff lol. Thats only a few. i dont use mods if that even exists in this game.

It sounds like it may have to do with server lag, something you can try to mitigate lag/packet loss is use tcp optimizer. I personally use it and have a way better connection now. It does limit your download speed, but your gaming connection will be solid. I saved my custom config and when i need my fast download i just revert to default then when i finish back to my saved settings. If you are interested in learning more about it i highly suggest you look at khorvie techs videos where he explains it and shows the best settings for tcp optimizer.

Sincerely thank you for the kind offer of assistance. This game in particular has so many weird dependencies and settings, it can be maddening trying to really discover the actual problem source.

It sure does man and for me at least it was one of the only games that has these issues(mostly with stuttering). I had to do around 10 fixes/ adjustments just to get rid of the stutters and many many many hours of researching. It was painful hahaha. I might end up posting in the future a guide of absolutley everything that i did improve this games performance/ overall pc which can probablly help many others specially those with older hardware. Anyways if anything pops up or have any concerns either add me or make a post i'll probably be around(:

I had this problem and deleting this file worked for me… thank you
I had the problem of I was I guess running in place, I could turn, jump, shoot but I couldn't move from my spot, found out after a week of dealing with this that it was because i was getting 220 FPS in game, limited it to 60 and there is no problem at all.

Hope this helps anyone that is having the same problem.
