Up to you personally if you wanna buy it. I've bought several copies, but never the subscription (Their marketing very much sabotages the quality of both the game integrity and our enjoyment in engaging on the 76 platform. Additionally the subscription is currently becoming a pay gate rather than an advantage of which to enhance game play)
Making friends in game is super easy. I've played for five years (*Oof, six?) and met numerous amazing people that far outnumber the typical jerks you find in online gaming; one thing to be aware of is that many fans' sense of humor mirrors that of their chosen gaming platform - don't expect cheery laffy-taffy dad jokes so much as dark, sad wit. If that and love of blasting green dudes are your passions you'll fit right in - at least as much as one can with the vastly varying personalities, interests, backgrounds and origins of 76ers. Solo play is totally doable if that's your dig, or team play on public teams is equally easy. Variation is a strong suit for 76.
The majority of story-telling within Fallout76 is found within the environment via notes and terminals, and by following the vary loosely linear story line quests. The majority of game play is very sand-boxy but the highlights are Building CAMPs, collecting, perfecting your own apparel/wardrobe/equipment, grinding public events, Legendary Item Crafting, and wandering for easter eggs.
Fallout 76 works best as casual game, enhanced greatly by social activities found by interacting with the community either in-game or on discords, forums, or other social media. I would recommend 30 min-3hr sessions for optimal experience, though if you really know the game and enjoy it longer sessions are possible.
Right now the plot is on pause till and if we get a story line extension
Atmosphere felt closer to f1
When you play it, it will feel like the game is on very easy F04 with a few buffed enemys
In which you'll have to manage weight
All quests can be solo'd
One you might have to join in on
Never buy this game at full price
Buy on sale
To answer the one question I can: Yes. You can play it "solo", to an extent. You'll find it difficult to complete events, especially the bigger ones, by yourself, but you don't have to group up with anyone to do them. You just have to show up and fire your weapon with everyone else and you'll get the rewards. I play this game like it's a single player game, in my mind the other players are just sentient NPCs going about their programmed activities.
The worldbuilding shows more of the cruel side of pre-war america and how it affected the way people survived. We learn about pre-war political movements, the suffering of the first generation of post-war survivors etc. The actual open world you play in is the best they ever made imo with all the diverse biomes and areas to explore.
Dialogue from the NPC's and the player is wayyyyyy better than in fallout 4. There's proper skill checks in dialogue and you can actually see the whole sentence your character will say before clicking on it.
Being an online game, it doesn't have as much options with regards to different choices you can make during quests. You can choose what factions you want to join/side with and a number of moral dilemmas but when talking about huge gamechangers the options are limited since they can't really change the actual open-world too much without it breaking the immersion of level 1 players fresh out of the vault.
The storylines themselves aren't anything to write home about. They're better than fo4 and fo3 imo, but not even close to fonv.
Base building is as good as it was in fo4. The main difference being that, while there are more things to build with in total, you have to unlock these new building materials/items by doing events and quests.
The gameplay itself is just plain good imo. I'm a solo player and I'm having a blast with the bows they added since I imagined playing as an archer would give me a very different experience compared to traditional fallout.
This was completely true. There are tons of fun character builds to try and due to the nature of the game you can switch between builds on the same character quite often which saves a lot of time.
If you like fallout you should give this a chance. I struggled a bit at the start but once I got a solid foundation going, it was a blast to play.
F76 doesn't have things which are your top interests. Plot was entirely made up to justify Online experience and this was the main reason for disasterous launch. F76 made a horrible mistake by choosing wrong setting to justify online experience. It went about as horrible as everyone expected. Actually even more horrible than anyone expected. It got better, no doubt about it, but it's nowhere near with F4 and given the fact that F4 was so so for you, i am sure the situation with F76 will be even worse.
When you mention that "Work eats most of my time, so I wouldn't want to waste what's left on a game that I won't like" - i will be the one to say it. F76 is one of the most heavy FOMO oriented games. And last thing you want is to get abused by FOMO from F76 when work eats most of your time. That's another reason why my advice would be to avoid it.
The only real reason to play F76 is when you are absolutely hungry for Fallout content and you did everything in F4 and you still want more. Only then F76 will be a good game for you. But if you want to play F76 to learn more about Fallout universe - you better use Youtube for that.
Get the game on a sale and just try it out that is the best solution for you.
You are pretty punished to use power armour at ever turn with janky UI, chassis bugs and having to get out of it way more than you should need to. Yes make most peoples' reason to want to play a chore. The tried and true small guns/heavy/energy were divided even more and IT SUCKS. You can change but it takes time to farm and level to do so.
76 is a harder slog from a gameplay perspective. The quests aren't great and they can be fairly tedious with a lot of to-and-fro.
There is a lot of time-consuming micro-management. So if your spare time is short I wouldn't buy it to play as an rpg.
There are small mini-games every 20 minutes or so which you can fast travel to. But you need to be fairly strong to survive in most.
There are 3 main sub-plots. Again you need to be a tank to make it through these and they can be quite lengthy, The only save mechanism is to exit the game.
There are aspects of the game which are enjoyable. But like many MMORPG's it is a very grindy game. A lot of the time you aren't playing quests but just maintaining your weapons, armor and supplies. And at times being multiplayer it can be a real negative experience. There are quite a few ferals around.
So only buy it if on sale for $8.
I have some 130 hours in, 129 of which were played solo. Events require others but - and this really bears mention - I've come across no griefers. None. I'm sure they are out there, and perhaps it's because I'm in Canada on a Canadian server? So far everyone has been friendly and, in a few instances, downright GENEROUS!
It's hard to put into words the moment when a player straight up GAVE ME a suit with environmental protection - at level 4, that was a godsend! Another visited my camp and dropped 30 stimpacks + 30 Radaways, gave me a thumbs up left - I barely had time to emote a big heart! It may just be my luck but damm the people here are awesome!
One thing I absolutely LOVE about FO76 is the little stories on terminals. The one with the pastor questioning his faith was particularly well written but the one about what happened to the voice actress for the Lady of Mystery (from the Silver Shroud radio show) was exceptionally well done.
I'm grading on a curve here : my opinion is that Bethesda Studios cannot write a story to save their lives, create memorable characters or fail to telegraph a plot point with giant neon letters . . . the "plot twist" about Shaun? Really!?!!! So when I say that I find the writing here is some of THE BEST ever from Bethsoft, remember to put that in perspective!
I'll say this, and probably my enthusiasm has at least SOME to do with the absolute dog sh1te that was STARFIELD but FALLOUT 76 is the first game since CYBERPUNK2077 (which I first played in 2022, patched to 1.53) where I look forward to coming home so I can return to that world! And the map! . . . dear lord this map has sights that take my breath away!!!
Best regards!
