According to Bethesda twitter
"@Fallout 76 will be brought offline tomorrow, April 18th at 10 AM EST to apply an update. Patch Notes to follow."
Pretty sure its only 9 am eastern and I just got booted out.

So after an hour I got back on and then got the message about server maintenance right away. Guess the server was down or I was having individual issues.

I got booted at 3pm GMT which I believe is 10am EST, also got an update afterwards. Sometimes servers go down, but normally you can jump straight back on since I believe they dont down all servers at the same time, thats from my experience anyway.

There is a new patch, so they update the servers for one to two hours.
Don't bother to look at https://status.bethesda.net/en because it's not up to date and useless...
