melee is what they might do for giggles
but its 1/100th slower to level
no point in using melee since gun do more dps
Ammo is only an issue early on.
It becomes Trivial.
I define high level as 600+, high enough to have all your legendary perks unlocked and max
their are no literally no characters who did melee right to 600, their are level 600+'s who are bored who will switch to a melee weapon for kicks
The reason is that you kill and tag a fraction of the enemies that a person with guns does.
Melee, move to the next target guy with gun kills it, move to the next target guy with gun kills it, move to the next target guy with gun kills it, move to the next target melee, repeat... if your lucky...
In events you won't be getting any tags let alone any kills if any higher level player is remotely close to you
vs
Shoot, shoot, shoot some more, shooty shot shooty shoot. I said a shoot shoot, shooty shot, a shoot shoot shooty shot
maybe ill use melee until i get a good gun
However, you're likely going to find that guns will be the long term option going forward. Once ammo isn't a concern, you'll be able to kill faster and more conveniently - overall.
Anyone that says melee isn't powerful hasn't played a decently built melee character.
If you are a new player, I'd definitely suggest a melee build that can also function as a heavy guns build (max Strength and high to max Intelligence). You can forgo the armor easter egg hunt and stick with Power Armor. Once you have this character bringing in resources, weapons and armor, you can use it as a springboard to make alternate characters that use different builds. Without Anti Armor legendary perk, this build will still give you 75% armor penetration (and faster swing) on melee and 45% armor penetration (and higher accuracy) for heavy guns.
Starting out, use whatever you can get your hands on, but eventually do the quest in Watoga (at level 50) for a good 2hd sledgehammer. Use that until you can get a faster swing legendary version. Use powered mod on your Power Armor arms and bust out power attacks. Most or all of your swings should be one hit kills.
Power Armor lasts awhile (without repairing), makes you immune to environmental diseases and gives immunity to fall damage. It also has damage and rad reduction beyond what is displayed in the stats. Pve-wise, you are a walking battle tank that swings a sledge hammer. It's a very low maintenance option for new players. When you switch over to heavy guns, you'll be relentless murder turret.
As you are rampaging across Appalachia, try to find yourself a decent legendary explosive Gatlin gun while you are doing the melee thing - then switch over. The damage is good, the fire rate is economical and the ammo (5mm) is plentiful. The Gatlin gun will fit all your grinding needs. For bosses, find yourself an ultracite laser gatlin gun. You won't need extra ammo for it - it runs off fusion cores that you already have for your power armor. Base magazine size per fusion core is 500 rounds, but if you use rank 3 Power User card (intelligence) that doubles to 1000 rounds and also doubles the life of your fusion cores powering your power armor.
Keep a melee weapon on hand and swap perk cards around when you want to swap back to melee mode.
At a minimum, you'll want Marsupial and Speed demon mutations. Marsupial you can jump to locations to kill stuff and Speed Demon gives you faster run speed and faster reload.
I use guns mainly, but i still use melee from time to time
To me, there are situations where melee is much faster at killing stuff then guns (in solo at least)
No need to waste ammos for low end mobs either...especially if they all rush in melee range anyway
Plus, it is a change from guns and it is fun to plow things from time to time...eheh
Just slotting Incisor 3 is enough to make melee somewhat decent
