I'm looking to mess around with a Tesla Rifle. Input?
So many times I see where it hits players (no damage) but hurts enemies. Huh?
I've heard many times it's best for mobs but does terrible on solo enemies.
Bosses?
Anything else?

Its a solid gun

The v63 Bertha is a double twoshot faster fire faster reload

Which is just minimally worse than the gold standard quad faster fire faster reload

Telsa shines in tagging events like radiation rumble, in a double exp event you can get 12 levels post 1000 (or basically a hundred - three hundred baby levels) from a single event

Telsa is also great for things with invisible enemies

Telsa is acceptable vs a single target, ammo hungry but good overall DPS

Tesla is also a poor skill mans PvP gun as it is fairly easy to tag PvP'ers with it (we all use stealthboys to ignore vats attacks and be harder to see) - Won't work against any skilled players but will mop up noobs like a ghoul chewing down on brains

Tesla is very good weapon, one of my favorites. You can use it as a tagger by hip firing, it doesn't do tons of damage that way but will almost instakill softer enemies like scorched etc. If you aim tesla you can do all sorts of cool trick shots, shoot around corners, chain the arc to hit enemies behind other players etc. And if you use vats it just melts stuff. Tesla has higher base damage than Fixer or Handmade, vats concentrates the arcs and you can use it against bosses too just like Fixers. Only downsides of teslas are short range without Grenadier perk (not sure if that trick still works, probably) and they are loud so they won't work for stealthy situations.

I don't PVP. I loathe it.
Ammo hungry as in 3 round burst = bad ammo efficiency or hold down full auto bad ammo efficiency?

Tesla's ammo consumption depends on how you use it, if hip fired it uses tons of ammo and basically only quad and Bertha are useful options, if aimed it uses a bit less since arcs don't spread as much and in vats it uses about the same as Fixer/Handmade. But it has pretty short vats range so you need to get closer to enemies than with other rifles.

It's a fun weapon, but it's so obnoxious in public events that I never carry it.

I might play on the Custom server first.
I do have that named Tesla and just got a Quad one today.

Tesla rifle is a great weapon, especially really good for clearing out large swarms of enemies. V63 BERTHA is a great named Tesla rifle.

Should be noted I have somehow ended up in PVP with other plays using the tesla rifle during events, I guess it's just the nature of how its attacks arc between targets. One time during VATS I unknowingly locked onto another player, just a few volleys from my tesla rifle took them down fast.

Make sure to fit commando (or rifleman if it's not auto) perks and science perks to get the most damage out of it.

Standard clip size of 15 is small. Good enough for lightweight work like rad rumble. Quad is much better. A vampires will keep you healthy against pack attack by weaker enemies like super mutants in eviction notice. But quad and vampires are mutually exclusive.

It will kill some types of friendlies unintentionally if they are in the arc zone, like random encountered BOS and raiders. So if attending a daily quest like a firebase response or similar just don't jump in and start firing away. They are safe in the 20-minute events.

Ammo is cheap to make so they are good for events where you don't want to waste using expensive ultracite for example. I always upgrade to auto. They handle some types of enemies better than ballistic. Can take multiple clips of 15 to kill stronger enemies hence the potential need for vampires or aristocrats if you are wealthy. Short range makes them useless against flying SB's. So you need to carry multiple weapons.

Even with repair perks they can degrade quickly. You get used to fixing them more frequently so it's not a major problem. They are lightweight so you can carry multiple types e.g. medics is handy for healing caravan brahmin.

Ammo hungry as in

1 - Return on kills is low so you don't get a tonne of energy cells back and tend to quickly consume ammo over time
2 - It can fire absurdly fast with faster fire rate and overkill enemies
3 - Two shot and Quad with faster fire 20% - 50% of the shots don't register or the clip gets reloaded early

Finally on Custom server.
This thing is EPIC.
A have a slight disability which affects my hands somewhat so this seems to help with finer movement and aiming.
Commando already eats ammo anyway.
Currently, main is using an Energy Commando build.

Don't forget to put the lightbulb in your mouth like uncle fester so you know when the charge is running through you :steamhappy:

You will annoy everyone and be very ammo-poor but it dominates public events.
