I'm very confused by how the image of mutants on the East Coast seems to be glamorized. . .
I checked the wiki and they said that the mutants in the East Coast are different from the mutants in the Capital Wasteland. . . This is a good explanation, but I feel that things in the wasteland have been beautified since Fallout 4. . . . The mutants in fO3 and FNV look more terrifying, more like mutated human species

The mutants in fo4 and fo76 feel like a kind of green-skinned orc. .

Have you noticed? I feel that FO4 has started to have female protagonists. Is it to cater to female players to beautify the Fallout universe and make it look less terrifying?

Quite honestly, I welcome the change. I feel it is the result of an evolving art style and greater creativity. The first easy thought that comes to mind when imagining a fantasy world full of nuclear consequences is a desolate and ugly world. The concept that mutations and impact on creatures, weather, eco-systems etc could be sometimes ugly or barren but other times very weird, diverse, beautiful or desolate in ways not previously imagined is an excellent evolution. One of the things I have enjoyed about Appalachia is seeing the stark difference of how the wastelands are impacted differently in different regions. The forests, the mire, the ash heap, toxic valley. etc.

As far as the comment about super mutants specifically, They have pretty much always looked like muscled orcs to me. After reviewing the models from FO1 - 76 what strikes me most is how much more realistic they have gotten. They don't seem pretty. The biggest difference it the lack of a constant exposed rictus grin. I have a hard time seeing a really extensive model change. We know there are at least 4 strains/FEV types creating super mutants. For 27 years of game design I don't think it is too extreme.

I am a female gamer who has been playing Fallout religiously since Fallout 3 and who has gone back to play and replay the original games. I have to say that it is nice to finally feel like woman have some representative place in the game that isn't just a token nod to the option. I love these games but I have experienced deliberate story telling and plot lines that focus on a lot of sexual and physical violence against women. You might argue that in a post apocalyptic worlds of COURSE there would be a lot of vulnerability experienced by women (and you would be right), but this is primarily a fantasy game. In a game where I can inject myself with a stim-pack to regenerate massive damage, run into monsters mutated beyond the capability of evolution and even get abducted by aliens... I am keenly aware that the stories the game tells, the plots they highlight are deliberate choices made by game developers. The past gross male power fantasies have always been alienating and something I had to tolerate to have access to a game I love because those were the only options I was given. I am THRILLED that my gender has started to enjoy more significant roles and characters that feel less like an after thought. Playing a powerful character within a fantasy narrative doesn't have to be limited by gender. I think the concept that more "beautiful" art styles are being done to cater to female players is a little simplistic. However, it is apparent that they ARE finaly thinking about making games with appeal to more than just male players.

My guess would be that they mutated, since they are mutants and all.

Well, for one thing Fallout 3 takes place on the East Coast and it probably has the most ugly super mutants, though it's hard to compare 3 to the first 2 fallout games since it boils down to god-view isometric 90s era computer graphics and any handbook art that might be floating around... I dunno, Marcus from Fallout New Vegas always looked pretty 'beautiful' to me and he's a Fallout 1 and 2 era super mutie.
https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Marcus

Fallout 4 had the institute working on super mutants, and arguably they got the closest to perfecting the process since one of their scientists is also a super mutant.

I dont know enough about to FO76 super mutant population to guess why they look better than Washington D.C.'s but my guess would be it's because the Super Mutants in FO3 were abducting people and forcing the change on them, which sounds like the worst way to have it happen to you....

As someone who is always interested in Wasteland Lore (listen, some of ya'll know them Forgotten Realms, Elder Scrolls, and Outer Rim Grey Jedi Worlds - I focus on post apocalyptic Mad Max stuff) - I find the most interesting stuff is in the fringe material:

Fallout started as a Wasteland game re-imagined, but some of that Wasteland lore still managed to creep into the Fallout franchise. But to make the lore even more wackadoo, Wasteland has it's own spin-off title called 'Fountain of Dreams' which is set on the radioactive island of Florida (lol).

But even Bethesda era Fallout dabbles in spinoffs, and now that it's all kinda being bundled together I gotta wonder how much of Fallout Tactics became canon - what IS a hairy deathclaw? (lol)

Are all of the vaults run by a central vault robo brain? Fallout Tactics AND the show kinda lends to that thought.

Its a fun franchise to read the wiki on, but as far as how concrete the lore is -- I would say take it about as seriously as 50 years of X-Men comics being turned into a timeline

Okay, if there is no conspiracy theory...

I think it's the weather. Although there is a radiation storm, the probability is very small...

I always feel that something is missing since FO4... I am not as invested as FO3 and FNV.

The human Virgil infected himself with the FEV in order to be able to hide from the institute. So him being a mutant and him working for the institute are mutually exclusive.

Yeah, maybe covid-25 will make us all more beautiful too. Something to hope for.

This is kind of semantics, the institute was abducting people in the commonwealth to experiment on them with the FEV and then dumping them back out and replacing them with synths - Virgil infected himself with the strain that the Institute had been using, with the collected knowledge they had gained from decades of experimentation. To be fair, outside of Fawkes, Virgil is the closest you get to the Masters brand of mutant, since Marcus is fully cognitive.

now, OP says that he doesnt care about Fallout 3 but he keeps saying Capital Wasteland.... Get a map and prepare to be amazed.

Fallout 3 = Capital Wasteland = East Coast

Edit: they really do spell it Capital, thats hilarious

Im just going to nerd splooge all up in here for no reason:

Was it always a big scaly lizard thing? Nope. My initial design for this terrible creature was a the apex predator of the wasteland, a mix of wolverine and brown bear, mutated by the FEV. It could survive any environment and feared nothing; a legendary force of nature that struck terror into the hearts of men! Unfortunately, the artists took one look at my concept sketch and said, 'Dude, that's way too much hair.' It was true. The Wolverine-bear was very furry, and there was just no way around it.

So here's what happened: the newly formed Black Isle started work on what would be Planescape: Torment. One of the first art pieces was a monstrous creature called a Terrasque. It was sculpted in clay and was then point-by-painstaking-point digitized into a 3D model. As Planescape moved forward, it turned out that the Terrasque wouldn't actually be featured in its design, leaving that tasty model in disuse. Thus, the furry wolverine-bear became a hairless reptilian biped. (Take a look at page 339 of the D&D second edition Monster Manual. Holy cats! It's a Deathclaw!)

So actually the soul survivor from FO4 is clearly just one of the Nameless One's incarnations... and stuff. Because the FO lore has never, ever been completely wacky

Deathclaw.

Or maybe it's just A DnD monster

But the mega sloth is just a mutated regular sloth that looks a lot like the North American Giant Sloth

To understand why they changed you just have to look at the writers.

Bethesda before Fallout made The Elder Scrolls, a fairly generic Tolkien-esk fantasy world.

When they wrote for Fallout they did what they know so it is just Elder Scrolls with guns.

Super Mutants are therefore just generic Orcs, no more, no less. They are low effort.
