The Mothman is a "real" thing!
Do people know that the Mothman is a real event that people claim to have seen? I was amazed to see it's not just an odd fallout creation.

The ogua (also known as the Monongahela River Monster of agoa) is the same. As is the Smiling Man random encounter. Pretty much most if not all of the cryptids in the game are based on real life urban legends.

The only one (going from the list of cryptids on the wiki) that isn't an urban legend is the mega sloth. Those really did exist, and the first fossil evidence of them (specifically, the megalonyx) was found in a cave in West Virginia.

I really wish they made a second Wild Appalachia update, I was hoping they would add some new one with Skyline Valley but nope... and looking at the roadmap we are not getting any cryptids :( only more pioneer(maybe there are some cryptids here)

Some really cool content, and it creates a lot of interest in a historically rich region of the country. All of the real locations like the land-bound light house and whitesprings resort have pretty cool history, too. I wish they'd keep a little more true-to-life for locations with updates; it was one of the most attractive features of the game originally.

Even as random encounters cryptid-spawns really enrich the game with the true-to-life legends. I think my favorite is still smiling man.

Yeah, there's even an actual statue of Mothman in real life Point Pleasant just like they have in the game. The real life statue isnt as neat, though. I've been.

Just wait until you hear about Centralia and its connection to the Silent Hill movies. Dun dun DUNNNNN

Axtully - Fallout 76's weird love affair with photography and tourist traps is why I drove out to Roswell a few weeks ago - got a nice picture of their weird sign and ate at a diner before checking out the UFO museum lol

Yeah right.

Next you’ll be trying to tell us Fastnacht is a real celebration… or… or that… that Dolly Sod’s is a real place.

Go away, troll. No food for you here.

These are all clearly fake news, I agree 100%.

What even is "Helvetia" supposed to be, that probably doesn't even exist or is weirdly known for cheese and chocolate that aren't even all that good, at least not good enough to make a thing about them being known for it or anything. Pfft.

All the cryptids in 76 are based on actual cryptid legends. Their in-game depictions are way off, but the cryptids are pulled from real life cryptids.

I live just up from Point Pleasant, on the Ohio side of the river. Point Pleasant is like a half hour drive from my house. (Ohioans measure how far things are by how long it takes to drive there rather than in miles.) I've been to Point Pleasant several times, to the Mothman statue, to the Mothman museum, and to the festival several times.

Mothman is part of the local lore, not just for Point Pleasant but this region. In the game there's a collapsed bridge over the Ohio River in Point Pleasant, with a plaque about the Silver Bridge. That really fell and was a big deal around here. I knew people that were kids in Point Pleasant around the time of the Mothman sightings and they recalled some of the local hysteria about it, which came to an end when the bridge fell in December leading up to Christmas. That very real local tragedy diverted attention from Mothman.

Yes the cryptids are based on real folklore from the area and I might be in the minority but I think it was a mistake adding cryptids rather than regular mutated wildlife. The Thrasher is a good start. I still want a rad Stork from the Fo4 art book. 6-7ft tall and they hunt in packs.
I'm the first to say that Beth is lazy in the writing department and overall dropping the ball like a lot, but using Cryptids as a source of "but what if those where nuclear mutations though"seems to mesh pretty well with Fallout weirdness and seems fine.

I'm aware that may just be me.

Agree that it fits the theme.

But I don’t think the cryptids are necessarily a result of the radiation. I read it as the cryptids being real, and now we get to fight their post-apocalyptic radiated versions.

I disagree. The monster variation is pretty much on par with most MMOs. Even the likes of WoW or FFXIV reuse models over and over again. The cryptids are a good way of adding a few out of the norm encounters without having to find a way to shoehorn these creatures in all over the place, like they did with the floaters.
