Explosive vs Speed
I like Aristocrat as my 1st legendary. What is the better second? Explosive or Speed? And to what extent does it matter whether you use the demolition perk?
What has the best damage output? I struggle with how the game calculates it.

Explosive gives a 20% second hit of damage (up to 32%) but

Weapon speed = 100 damage x 1.25 = 120 damage + crits 1/4th more frequently which are massive damage

Explosive = 100 damage x .2 = 100 shot + 20 shot (32 with perk)

So on paper

Weapon speed gives 125 and explosive gives 120(132)

BUT since resistances need to be factored

Weapon speed gives 1.25 damage over what you would otherwise have

Explosive gives 3-5% over what you would otherwise have (and less vs big bosses)

The ONLY times explosive is superior to faster fire rate are

1 - Quad Explosive Railway... explosive changes the projectile type and makes this a broken gun
2 - Two Shot Explosive heavy weapon tagging guns - you won't put out much damage but you will hit everything in an event
3 - PvP "The Dragon" where you can't get weapon speed, but explosive gives you an additional 440 - 550 damage vs players if you vats head crit shot (880 to 1100)

I personally prefer speed as explosive damage sends all enviornmental stuff flying with its blast radius. I've also tried using demolition perk maxed out with my vengance and noticed not much of a damage boost. That is just my experience

Holy moly there was so much to it haha. Does the explosive radius and explosive damage perk cards work with the damage or is it specific to the weapon and not the effect?

I see, i wasn't 100% sure because during radiation rumble and well most of the time my primary weapons are gatling and foundation vengance. Vengance having explosive effect i equipped both perk cards regarding explosives and saw the damage be only 4/5 at times. When normally it shows up as 2/3 against glowing ghouls and sometimes it was just straight 2/3 damage with no damage increase. With all the explosions i couldn't tell about the range, but at least with the numbers on I could see the damage I was doing.

Explosive 100% of the time.

Because it is more fun.

Since you specified "Aristocrat" I'd defer to the comments above, but Explosive is the way to go if you have a vampire's weapon - the explosion counts as a second hit, so 4% per hit instead of just 2%, plus that explosion is area effect. Shoot into a mob and you're from bloody to juggernaut in no-time. All of my characters carry a vampire's gauss shotgun for sticky situations - even just 1-on-1 I get 32% healing per hit. Spam that in a mob and you're g0dd@mn immortal. I barely even use stimpaks anymore.

Two-shot explosive railway is a great way to blow yourself up when you try and kill a melee enemy pointblank. Does a ♥♥♥♥ ton of damage though.

Depends on how big a mag your gun has. Love speed on my .50cal.
Mooman Jun 26, 2024 @ 12:50pm
Speed is also related to AP usage. Depending on how good your pool and AP regen are speed may be annoying.

As the speed of the weapon doesn't affect the AP drain (outside of auto/aligned mods), having a higher fire rate will drain the same AP in less time.

It's a balance only you can answer based on your AP 'downtime' due to magazine size and reload.

Just crafted a zealot rapid durable gauss minigun and attached a prime. A bit of a single purpose weapon, but I think that is the ultimate scorched killer. The only problem is that if you only use it for the scorched queen events, you will run out of crimson flux quite quickly.

Just dont make anything too flashy ok? A lot of people dont like the explosion effects in the game atm lol. Personally i dont care im able to figure it out.
