The game is also on sale right now, but if you really want it and will use either of the two I have codes I don't want.
A once off fee you can play till the servers shutdown or Bethesda change their mind.
There is an optional subscription that offers a few benefits. I'll let other go into that more.
Try the trail, decide later.
Meaning, you pay once for the game, but it requires constant internet connection to their Servers
You do NOT need the subscription to play but, depending on how you play the game, you may need it for enjoyment :D
Important Note - The base game comes with a personal stash box with 1200 weight limit and you can only have one, as all of the stash boxes are linked to your singular stash box.
Subscription: Fallout 1st - or, as some Vault Dwellers call it, 'FU1st'
This has a monthly / yearly fee that comes with some benefits that make things easier:
→ Unlimited Scrap Box - You collect garbage around the wastelands and utilize it for various things: Ammo, Construction, Repairs. This box has unlimited weight to store your excessive garbage
→ Unlimited Ammunition Box - Holds all ballistic type ammo, i believe the only exception is Plasma Cores, but not familiar enough...i think its used to charge some weapon(s)
→ 1250 Atoms (not certain if this is the correct amount) - Atoms are the 'Atomic Shop' currency. It's mainly cosmetic and functional (such as, additional C.A.M.P. sites (player bases))
* It appears that two items were introduced to the shop that are the actual plans to craft the weapon, not cosmetic. It seems these can also be earned, over time, through playing the game. But, you know - Slippery Slope.
→ Private Server (almost forgot this one) - You can 'create' your own private server at any time, and as much as you want. You can allow friends to access it as well, as long as you're in-game / world
These are the main perks, i believe there are some others, such as a few locations you can fast travel for free, once you've discovered them
Anything stored inside the Scrapbox and Ammobox can be removed after subscription to FO1st ends, but, you can't place anything else inside. Also, you may need to already have the box(es) placed at your base to access, although there are several of these boxes in a few places around the map.
You can earn a finite? amount of Atoms through completing specific challenges
made-up example: killing 1000 rats. discovering every location in specific region
i have FO1st, so i will state - You do NOT need to hoard everything. if you understand how to play and don't have a collection addiction, you can very well play the game with the limited space inside your personal stash box (1200 weight)
So, if I buy it and just play free without Fallout 1st, I can still enjoy the 'normal' stuff? It's kinda like Elder Scrolls Online and their Crown system?
Its free right now as a trial on steam IIRC... I think that gamepass for pc has it free for free as part of the TV series tie in
Eitherway
the game is purchase to play
They then have a fallout 1st monthly subscription riddled with pay to win diseases
you don't need it, but they maliciously make the game worse for no reason other than to encourage people to buy it... and they have historically given absurdly potent in game advantages to players who have it, the worst of those being the 6 bonus perk slots that they gave fo1st players for 3 months (now you can obtain the item that granted that bonus via gold [in game currency])
the pay to win thing also helps alleviate several of the main quest bugs that prevent progression
the pay to win thing also helps players during certain seasonal events gain a not insignificant in game advantage over those who don't have it
9/10 for me
