Multiplayer questing - WTF?
My wife and I started playing a few days ago (yes, we're part of the TV series wave) and one of our first quests as a team required us to enter the Wayward Hotel and speak to Duchess. I'm not sure if we did this correctly, but as far as I could tell, i had to enter "As Team Leader" (since I had created the group), and she had the choice of going in Solo or going in to "Help the team leader".

My wife did not sign up for an MMO to do solo quests, so she entered "To Help the Team Leader". I completed the quest, but her quest did not advance at all. Eventually we figured out that if we left the instance, I could promote her to team lead and then we could go in roles reversed, her as the Team Lead and me helping.

But this required us to do the quest TWICE. Please tell me we are doing this wrong and missed out on a way to do it together with both of us advancing our questline and only doing the quest once? Or (shudder) is every quest going to be like this throughout the game?

You did everything right, unfortunately there isn't an option to co-op quests so that both get them done on one go and you need to do them all twice.

Welcome to Bethesda Logic

Every quest in an interior location is like this, because the choices you make in interior locations are permanent once saved. Especially later on, they can have some pretty big effects on your quest-line and rewards. So that's why it is the way it is.

Hey, look on the bright side, for quests with big divergences (admittedly only 2 I can think of), you'll get to see both sides if you pick differently than your partner.

What choices? There are only 2 points in the ENTIRE GAME where a 'Choice' has ANY impact at all.

Fallout 76 is not an MMO. Its a single player game that just happens to have other people in it. Considering that the game engine was originally never meant to handle 2 players and had to be rewritten in parts to make even this bit of multiplayer possible, that isn't surprising.

Only 2 quest lines have a branching points where you need to join on faction or the other, in turn missing out on two missions on either side respectively.
As a solo player, you would have to start a new character.
The alternative is joining another player.

There are however plenty of other choices mainly during dialogs and interactions with terminals and robots, where SPECIAL skill checks are applied.

The whole quest system is a relic from the early days. Original questline was just a long tutorial giving all basic info of the world and teaching game mechanics from how to boil water to how to launch nukes, quests weren't (and still aren't) the main content of the game so they haven't been properly designed for co-op play.

The difference in Quest Pathing has zero impact on over all game play. To be a completionist does require 2 Characters. It otherwise make no real difference. As for SPECIAL checks, they now include multiple checks for almost every challenge to compensate for the Primary Build types, with all sorts of Chems/Perks to help get over the requirements.

Oh well, that's disappointing but I suppose manageable. We'll see how long we can endure this, or perhaps one of us will just forgo their questline.

Well you can do the different factions together later. One of you do the foundation mission chain and one crater mission chain. Both can do both quest chains until you have to chose what faction to help. You can experience both endings, without creating new characters for it.

They were upset that I got the achievement for dropping nukes despite hating nuclear warfare and never dropping a nuke, myself.
Clearly, something had to be done!
No more coop quests.
Yea, seriously.
*(the phrasing there makes it sound fairly egocentric, though I hope any reader understands I've exaggerated facetiously for entertainment value; blame Potato is a fine solution, excellent outlet for general ineptitude, however.)

Yeah, it's a bit annoying. Luckily the quests aren't that hard or mandatory to play the game so you can do them in bits. Also, welcome aboard, it's clunky and buggy game from utterly incompetent dev team but can be really fun if given a chance. :) And community is one of the best there is, friendly and helpful. :)

Thanks Eriskumma! Yeah, we can find a way to make it fun. The main reason I wanted to reply to you is to confirm your statement about this community, it's one of the best I've seen in a long time gaming.

That's why I don't group. That achievement is like... er... virginity. Once gone you can never go back to that group.

Spoken from a proud nuke virgin.
