Camp placement conflicts?

I played this game at launch and just returned and I remember one thing I hated previously was that my camp would sometimes not be there when I logged in because someone else occupied the space! Is that still a thing?

If so, does this make it worthwhile to do a private server using 1st pass? I know it's an MMO, but there is also the benefit of having secure workshops. I'm torn. I've been playing a lot of survival games lately on private dedicated servers so my wife and I are kind of used to the idea of just having our own world, there's a lot to be said for the lack of resource contention.

So, did they remove this issue or not? What do you think of private server as a solution?

I logged onto my old character as well and have no idea where my camp ended up. Apparently I need to re-deploy it, but I wonder what happened to my buildings, benches, and vending machines.

It says I have stuff for sale on vending machines, but that's it.

Sometimes when I can't place my camp on a world there's a pop-up that gives me the option to find another world. But sometimes there's no pop-up and when I get into a world it says I get a free CAMP placement and I have to re-build my CAMP. Not sure what determines the option.

There are a finite number of camp spots in the game, and some are much more popular than others.

If you log in and someone else has picked your spot, your camp will be packed up and you get the message that you have a "free camp placement". Do not take it. You can go back to the main menu and join a new server. Hopefully your camp can be placed there.

Everyone also gets two free camp slots. So you could activate camp slot 2, and use it until camp slot one is available.

If you do take the free placement, a blueprint is placed in the blueprint tab. You can try to put it down in another location. Good luck. It won't happen. You can scrap the blueprint and all of the floors, walls, ceilings, etc will be moved to your stored tab and you can put them down in the new location.

For the OP, when the game first dropped and there was a camp collision, your camp was packed up and you had to try and put it back. It almost never worked.

Camps placement conflicts are still a thing. It's probably going to be at least a bit better next update since the map is getting another moderately-sized region added onto it, which means lower chances 2 will overlap.

One solution is to just to take advantage of the feature to build multiple camps. If you have 2 camps and your 1st is taken, the game will tell you when you load in and let you quickly swap to your other camp. This is a useful feature even outside of conflicts, camps are free teleport locations and you can place them strategically near resources or places you want to go often but don't want to pay to teleport near. If you really want to be sure you can make 3+ camps, but you'll need to pay atoms for extra slots past the first few.

The other solution is just reloading the game. If your camp spot is taken, go to the main menu and find a different server. Repeat until it's not taken. If your spot is decent then it should not take many tries, and once you're in you're 100% fine since camp conflicts always side with whoever was there first.

The last measure is really just as simple as picking better spots. That doesn't mean the spot with the best resource access or best view or whatever, it means a spot that isn't popular. If your camp is in the middle of nowhere you're gonna have far less issues with it being taken than if you plop down a camp near the Wayward where many new players set up camp.

A private server? That sounds like it causes more issues than it solves, you're going to lose access to a lot of content like fighting raid bosses or doing the harder events that really want teams. But yeah if you're the only one on the server then you will be able to camp wherever you want.
