If you do not have the excavator Power armor. Scrap cans, pencils, paint cans, etc etc.. If you have the Excavator, Lucky Hole Mine. If you do not yet know how to access component view in the pipboy, figure that out and tag lead.

Hit up the gyms, a very good spot is the fire station close to the Rusty Pick free travel / legendary vendor.

Lots of weights (scrapping into lead) and a crafting station in the same building.

Note that you will get a timeout when you looted a bunch of lead items and will need to either wait 20 hours (?) or loot other garbage to clean out your loot record (no idea if that is even still a thing) for them to respawn for you.

For the long haul, what AbsynthMinded said about Excavator armor and Lucky Hole mine - you'd also need acid and access to a chemistry station to refine the ore, and you can also craft gunpowder from cloth + acid, but I guess gunpowder is easy enough to loot from the world and bodies en masse, as is steel scrap.

Adding onto what Sirius said, the small gym room in the motel near Flatwoods may have some weights. Being relatively close to Flatwoods where all the Responder crafting stations are, being over encumbered shouldn't be that much of a problem.

Missile silos have a gym in every bunker. Or go to lucky hole mine, there is like 500 lead there. Don't forget the hidden entrance.

As others have said gyms are a good location.
Flatwoods, Charlston Firehouse, hornwright estate, Eastern penitentiary are good locations.

Remember the way looting works. Outside of the 24 hr item respawn time each character has a 250(?) item list that you need to loot through in order to get the character reset. Meaning goto world loot the gyms + number of items to get 250+ then goto a new world. Items should appear (if not a another player might have just looted)

or skip the entire process of crafting and do a expedition or daily ops with someone.. when its about ot end switch to any weapon that uses 5.56 u will get a bunch of ammo ..

another lazy way is to convert all excess steel scrap into railwayrifle ammo .. then use ammo converter and trade in railway rifle ammo for 5.56.. easy peasy :) u get steel scrap a lot anyway.

Wasteland merchants have a special kit on them called bullet scrap. It's about 340caps and worth it.
Don't know your level but if you do a few WestTek runs? You get a lot and i mean a lot of 5.56 ammo, caus they drop it always even if you DON'T use 5.56 ammo weapon.

Since no one mentioned them, Tin Can traps. There are numerous ones around the map, and give lead and steel once scraped

Pickup all children's toys. They are painted with lead paint aka "wall candy"

Alternatively you can often find player vendors with 5.56 for sale.

Are you really having trouble with ammo? I remember having issues when game released, btu something has change since i restarted. Im swimming in ammo as a new character. Maybe im crazy but it seems the game tracks your active weapon and generates it as loot on bodies and ammunition boxes. I believe this because when i switch weapons the ammo i find then changes to the ammo i need for that gun. Again, maybe im crazy.

Your right. I had the same experience with ammo trouble when i first started a few years ago, now its much easier granted you have a optimized build, which i seem to not have now that my gun is 17 levels too low lol.

The Ammo Converter is, was and will always be 'A Joke'. It is the least efficient way to manage Ammo.
