The ini files are settings files where the game settings are saved. People with no clue will tell you that this is editing game files, but it is a settings file that is not even in the main game folder, so already they do not know what they are talking about. The game itself changes the contents of these files when it saves the settings you change in the game menus. So if altering the file was bad and would get you banned............ the game does it anyway when you change your own settings in the menus lol.

This is not what is meant by modifying game files. This is not hacking or modifying game code or using a DMA device to modify the games memory. Changing the ini is simply changing basic game settings that for whatever reason Bethesda did not include in the games menu as options. Some like the VSync option are very basic options and it is baffling why they were not included. It can be game breaking for some players and without being able to turn it off in the ini the game would be literally unplayable with terrible low FPS.

Not even joking. Anyone who is going to try to convince you out of ignorance or otherwise that you can get banned for changing basic game settings in the ini, is someone i would be extremely sceptical of any advice they give.

TLDR: Can you get banned? Yes of course. Will it be for changing game settings in the ini? lol no.

No, nearly everbody turned off vsync in the ini file. So you are safe ^^

There's a way to create you own ini tweaks. Google "Fallout76Custom.ini". Pretty sure they wouldn't ban you for something so supported they have an official way to do it.

Also I'm pretty sure almost every single player has edited the ini in some way. They would have to ban basically the entire playerbase if they suddenly took issue with it.

Pretty darn unlikely. I'm not sure what you'd have to change to manage that.
Part of this rumor if not a great majority is my fault. I apologize, OP. At the time that I mentioned it we had a couple known hackers unnecessarily requesting computer specs when "offering help" and privately guiding users with similar "help". There was no legitimate way to protect those users so the mild-misinformation was meant for them to protect themselves.

There should be a guide or two for doing this correctly in the Steam guides section.

The EULA states it is a violation to modify game files. The INI is a game file. Although it is not enforced uniformly, the EULA gives Bethesda the option to Ban should they want, if they find you have modified any files.

The vast vast majority of players do not need mods or edits to files in order to play. If you get a ban and come here for sympathy or help, expect to be Mocked without Mercy.

*Ah yeah, if it's a deciding factor in a ban - like they know you doin being bad boys n girls but the only they gotcha on is the .ini, then there's that...

The vast vast majority on PC deactivated V-sync in the settings file because it can brake performance. The EULA is just theoretical but you won't get banned if you change something in a settings file. Never heard that somebody got banned for this and it will never happen as long you only touch setting.ini files.

And if there is someone who says he got banned and just edited the settings file, then he lies and did something else.

I find it funny that anyone tries to argue this point to suggest that it doesn't happen without any prof to support such a claim. While you can research the archives and find many examples of otherwise unexplained banning situations where the charge by Bethesda was modifying files in some way. INI edit, reshadres, mebe not. In Game Chat Mods, more likely. Policy says Bethesda CAN ban for that. Just don't come here crying about it if it happens to you.

If a player gets banned its because of some suspicious mods, cheats or anything else which touched main files.
I doubt that players get banned for changing settings in the ini. Theoretically its possible but thats the case in many games.
I mean, most of the player base would be banned if they actually ban you for that. So the answer is, he is safe.
If he gets banned, he did something else.

In the end I do not disagree.. Everyone needs to be warned because no one reads the friggin EULA. The steps and options deemed safe are not explicitly safe, and could lead one to the next thing and the next thing and so on, and then banned.

Im trying to be the good guy not an A Hole. I personally approve through the principals of Liberty and Freedom, that any of us ought to be able to do anything we want to our software installs.. But the EULA says there's risks, and we should all be aware of the risks.

Admitting publicly on record is definitely not going to reduce the chance to get banned.
nOv1c3 Apr 18, 2024 @ 9:18am
lol oh lord people , you wont get banned for tweaking the iNI file , all you,er doing is changing basic in game setting and you are not modifying any games files
Dezktop Apr 18, 2024 @ 9:21am
ini is an extra level of options.
its just bad when its expected supermassive " dark pictures" is also bad for it with their pc ports.
