Start at level 20 if you want to struggle for no benefit.
Get level 2 and go scramblinng around every nook and cranny. Thats the best part of this game
You can respec at 25 anyway and you want to get to 50 asap either way.
My conclusion after reaching level 28 now is that I would've saved alot of time, even if people say it's quick, if I started at 20.
For people who played Fallout4, there isn't much to learn anyway.
It only takes about 20-30 hours to get to level 20 the normal way, but those 20 hours include many more Caps, weapon and armor parts, you'll have a more specialized build towards how you want to play.
The downside of starting at level 2? If you randomly buy perk cards, or don't pick a clear route you'll end up spending level up perk cards on things you'll end up not using along the way to level 50. I found starting at 2 made the game more enjoyable to play reaching the higher levels.
However... those are 20 hours, with a risk of gimping your build along the way, which you can only fix properly later on. At level 20 in my level 2 playthrough my sniper/rifle did a whopping 20 more damage per shot, as my rifle did at level 24 with my level 20 start.
This game is about collecting scrap, recipes and plans. Skipping part of the timeline might seem smart at first, but 20 hours in an MMO that can last you thousands is almost nothing. So I'd start at 2 and enjoy the journey and difficulty curve as it was intended.
Chainsaw is a level 20 weapon and you can pick 3-4 up a day and mod them through the vendor mods. It does not rely on ammo, if you need a good main or backup weapon.
This game is very forgiving, don't listen to people that say learn the game, this isn't a mmo you won't be facing a boss that requires mechanics. You can just run across the map and learn the game. All this game requires is reading.
Mutations are also your best friend, the quicker you get starched genes the better.
Youtube has guides up for when you realize that leveling to 50 is trivial.
Starting at 20, Newbie is likely going to be around Garrahan HQ in his 30's when the HP Sponginess is in full swing. There will be his first fights against Assaultron and Major Gutsy. Not going to be pleasant.
I've played a lot of Fallout before, but new to this (watched the Fallout show and felt for some 'new' Fallout
One thing: Is it possible to play the game completely solo, or will we need to play with others at some point, please?
Game is designed for solo play as a leader, with party members watching your progress and choices, but not interfering in dialogue. So it IS possible to play the game completely solo in terms of not sticking with others. On public servers everybody is doing their own things, not even talking.
In terms of singleplayer game mod, you have to buy 1st subscription to basically rent a server.
If you aren't happy with that character or wanna start over after you get the hang of it jump in your next character at 20 - this is ideal for Role Playing groups as you get randomized perks as a roll
I started over several times myself, and this would have been a godsend back then., Not for noobs though.
