Grouping up - What's the downside?
So i'm still early in the story and enjoying the solitude and atmosphere to be honest.

The game is poking me to look at the social screen and join groups to get various buffs.

Is there a downside to joining one?
Can i just join the group and benefit from buffs and carry on with my solo adventure or does the group also level up enemies to the groups level (even if i'm on the other side of the map)

Or are groups something i should just ignore til i finished the main storyline?

Some perks works only in groups. One of the best legendary perk require you to be in a party for it to work. It still work even when you are not near your party. Just join some random drinking icon group and do your own stuff.

For solo is lone wanderer perk for. Party perks seems to be better.

From what I've learned online, the faster you understand that leveling up fast is the way to go in this game, the "meta" is casual groups for the experience boost. Lone Wanderer 4/4 gives a VERY nice amount of AP regen, but honestly, the experience trumps the flexible combat style. And... you passively earn a few caps, and if they/you are close you share some experience as well.

There is no downside unless you're really into the Lone Wanderer perk card.

The upside to grouping is you get free FT to team members, their camps, their survival tents.

You get shared perk cards, xp buffs, and shared xp and more loot when doing events with them. And when they complete quests you get a cap or xp bump.

if you want to do your own thing be sure you join a casual team

If you team up with random or high level players you feel rushed and don't get to explore and take your time with the story.

Yeah that was one of my worries.
I'm not interested in power leveling as i want to experience the story but i want to get some of the buffs from being part of a group.

My main interest is to join a casual team and then go do my own thing. Visit their camps etc.

Grouping up - What's the downside?

The only downside would be being on a team doing quests when you're not the team leader. Only the team leader gets credit for completing a quest. Anyone else on the team is just along for the ride.

So, when doing quests either be the team leader or do the quests solo.

^^ This!

The stupidity in the Co-Op questing is pretty much so egregious that it alone influences many to not play this game. If 4 party member have the same quest, you have to complete it 4 times separately for everyone to get the same progression.

Hang on can you clarify this please.
Yesterday i played for a few hours as part of a group. I was just following along the main story line and my quest progression appeared to be working.

I think i'm misunderstanding what you are saying though.

If you had Your quests complete yesterday while on a team, you must have started a new team and were team leader. Otherwise you did not complete any quest you thought you were on.

They could be referring to expeditions.

If 4 people are trying to complete the same quest at the same time, only the leader can actually progress. You have to rotate each party member to leader to get them the same progression. This will be most evident when trying to enter quest related buildings. Expeditions and DailyOps are like events, not questing.

I encourage you to try it with anyone you can. Verify you both have the same uncompleted quest, goto the related buildings, and you will see you can enter as leader, enter to support the leader or go in Solo for your own progression.

Yeah, an Expedition is not a quest.
